No pre-paid auto, and it's just as well. You'd have no kidneys left when you got there. If you want pre-paid, take a taxi. The map is not the territory. --Alfred Korzybski
auto rickshaw will cost not less than 250 Rs.
I would suggest radio cabs which local delhi people used to commute whenever needed.. they charge somewhere around 300 Rs to Pahar Ganj @ Rs 7.50 per km.
good ones with controlled temparature.
one of them is 91-11-43434343 check others on internet

I started a sticky!
I am truly humbled.
I ended up taking a cab, not a prepaid one either. The dude took me to like 4 different places trying to sell me a package tour. Needless to say, I sure as hell wish I'd just taken a prepaid taxi and forgotten the idea of the EATS bus. As soon as I stepped outta the airport the taxi drivers spotted me, their fresh meat, and I was surrounded by cabbies.
Oh....the hilarity of it all now....if only I'd known what it was really like before I posted my initial post here on IM.

Yea, I think EATS buses are more comfortable and cheaper than pre-paid taxis. Prepaid taxis to Pahar Ganj are not Rs 400, maybe Rs 250. I've never had a problem with them but they often ask if I have a reservation. Having heard a lot about scams where they make you go to another hotel by saying yours is full/burned down/cordoned off by protests, I always say my friend is already there and waiting for me, and then they always just take me there. I'm a female often traveling alone, by the way. Never had a problem with a prepaid taxi so far, and there is a complaints phone number on the receipt if you want to report a problem.
In mid-Nov, I took the prepaid taxi from IGI to Ginger Hotel (next to New Delhi railway station). 2 persons + 1 baggage costs Rs250 only. Similar price for two different prepaid booths (one inside the departure hall, one outside). You can check the prices before pay.
I have taken an auto rickshaw from the Airport to Nizamuddin Raiwaystation (20 km) and payed by meter. It came up to 95 Rs only. I think to Pahar Ganj it should not cost more than 130 - 150 Rs by auto rickshaw. I would strongly recommend to take a rickshaw only by broad daylight and under no sircumstance at night. If you travel alone you better wait for the sun to come out if you arrive in Delhi by night.
Good luck

Reaching Delhi Airport

The Delhi Metro Line 3 now reaches Dwarka, near the airport (Line 3 should reach airport later in 2010). It would seem to be faster than bus or taxi from central Delhi. Has anyone used the Metro plus taxi to get to Delhi International Terminal 2? I'd like to know if this is a feasible/advisable way to get to the airport! hi ,
i have always taken pre paid taxi and had no problems with this ,it is set price from the booth i go to -250 rs to Pahar Ganj.
(i pay 200 rs when i go from pahar ganj -hotel to the airport)
a couple of times , girls have been in the queue also going to Pahar Ganj so we have shared the taxi and split the price ! ~:-)
a taxi for me is a luxury i only use on arrival and departure in India but it makes the whole thing less stressful when you have all your luggage ,to catch a taxi~

If it is first time -
a) avoid EATS bus
b) avoid pre-paid cabs (yellow black ones)
c) take pre-paid Easy Cab
A bit costly, but saves lot of mental trauma. Believe me!!

Since i will be reaching Delhi a day earlier than my gf, i will need to get to the airport in the evening to receive her.
Can someone advise where do i take a prepaid taxi or EATS bus somewhere near Paharganj (CottageYesPlease Hostel)
Thanks

For the EATS bus, Connaught Place is the real stop I think (about a 20-30 mins. walk to Paharganj, [seemingly] considerably more when not knowing your way and carrying a pack no doubt, so better grab a rickshaw or taxi if you end up here). But with any luck they'll be willing to drop you closer to it. If you then don't know your way you'll be inundated by touts btw. If you do know your way, it's very easy to shrug them off.
