Donations in Delhi
Hello, I will be going to Delhi in a few weeks and would like to bring items that would be of value to a local organization.
I am looking for a locally based and locally run organization to contact and inquire about what items would be of most value to them. i.e. children’s clothing, toothbrush/paste kits, etc. I would appreciate your assistance in listing websites of reputable organizations that i will research and contact. Thanks in advance, t. |

Since clothing, toothpaste, etc. is readily available in Delhi (and cheaper than it would be in Canada), and the organizations will obviously know their own needs better, why not just donate money?

I have never figured out the logic of shipping things by aviation fuel halfway around the world. Now many charities put it more bluntly, keep your trash give us the cash. When I was doing development work many moons ago the pros told me much of what they got was worthless and even ended up costing the charity money to dispose of. Funny, they said the worst was corporate donations, a pure tax play involving worthless inventory. If the OP wants to donate try the following. At the end of your trip leave behind all but what clothing, etc. is on your back. Be sure to leave it in an obvious manner of disposal, ie. placed in a waste can, or someone will surely come after you with it!!

The kitchen boy at my hotel in Delhi was using a toothbrush that should have been tossed out years ago, and perhaps it was. I couldn't stand to look at it, so when I left Delhi, I gave him a spare (still in the wrapper) that I'd been carrying.

I had an email from a place in Delhi... Had a look at their websie and they seem to be doing a good job. The email is the only contact I've had with them so can't say for sure if they're doing good work or not but the guy who emailed me seemed genuine and their website seemed very nice and well written. The fact they wanted to use some of our content (and actually asked if it was OK) gives them some credibility too.... Anyway here's the link....

We're that place in Delhi
I'm said e-mailer, Poipleshadow, and it felt great to see someone else mention Project Why. We could indeed use many things, but it all depends on the space you have and what you have access to. Some things are quite cheap here, but you can getter cheaper used children's books at thrift stores, etc. If you're interested in giving, you can PM me here on Indiamike and we can talk more about specifics.
Thanks, Andy and Project Why |
