Delhi to Manali

Hi
Myself and my family (wife and 5 yr old duaghter) are planning for a trip to Manali from delhi this august. We would like to know
1. The best way to get there - by bus or by private taxi ?
2. If by car, how long will it take. If we stop over at chandigarh...to see around it for 3/4 hrs, do we need to take a break over night ?
3. Is it safe to travel...(the roads) in night.
4. Is it true that only when we go by car, we can enjoy the scenery and not by bus.
5. How long is the journey..from delhi to Chandigarh and from Chandigarh to Manali...

We are totally confused! Hope I am not asking for too much....any info / experience on this leg will be helpful.

We did this trip last year. We went by train to Chandigrah, from Delhi - easy- then our trekking agency picked us up and it was a long drive to Manali - about 8 hours. The road only felt a bit difficult right before Manali - and it was full of traffic by then. This was 9:00 at night. We heard of many others driving to Manali from Delhi - if you have a good driver and a good car, do it. We know people from Delhi that went to Chandrigarh for a weekend and enjoyed it. So if breaking up the trip works for you try that. The scenery is amazing - but we saw many car wrecks on that drive from Charigarh to Manali and at one point we were literally stopped waiting for a bus to go pass. I wonder how better the roads are now a year later? I imagine much nicer!
