Hire a cab for flexibility. Otherwise, there are numerous morning and evening trains. You can check out the schedules on www.cleartrip.com/trains or at www.irctc.co.in
Cab's much faster than by bus. Your hotel could help. Agra is a short, 4 hr drive from Delhi. Be sure to leave early in the morning (~0500 hrs) so that you're past Delhi border before rush hour. You'll be in Agra by 0900-0930. Freshen up at a hotel, then go see the Taj and Agra fort. Come back to your hotel in the evening, cool off in the bath for a bit, grab a bite and head out back for Delhi by 1800 hrs. Of course, you'll be missing out on Fatehpur Sikri. But you gave yourself only a day. |

Or... leave Delhi late in the evening by train. Find a cheap hotel for the night and be at the Taj by 6am. It's glorious in the early morning. You could then also see the Fort and, if you wished, Fatehpur Sikri before returning to Delhi at a reasonable hour by train.
The fastest trains take about 2 hours, but most take about 3. To be honest, Irishrover, this question must already have been asked (and answered) a thousand times in the forum. If you search through the existing threads in the Agra sub-forum you'll probably find all the information you need to make an informed choice. |

^ I distinctly recall a thread debating whether to use cars or trains for this journey, so I went looking for it and got distracted by threads about Canadians and toilets and things. But I second Mickey- check out the Agra and general Rajasthan forums, we've discussed it before.
