I see a lot of queries and some complaints about taxis and guides in Delhi, so I thought I'd share a positive note about our stay. It was our good fortune to have a very soft-landing in India. Things worked out well for my family The four of us stayed two months at an Ahuja Residency apartment (www.ahujaresidency.com). The Ahuja's are wonderful hosts that just make everything work. They understand traveller's needs and really have their act together. There are guest houses for short stays in Delhi and Guragaon and they manage some apartments in the same cities for longer stays.
The other stroke of luck for us was getting a great English speaking driver. We kept him for two months and found him to be a great help. He assisted us with train tickets, touristing, haggling in markets and was a lot of fun. I asked him if it was ok to post his cell phone number and he said it was. His name is Deepak Sharma and his cell number is 9891310072. Note - we are back in the USA now and in no way are getting any kickback for these recommendations. Just hope they help others have as good a time in Delhi as we did. We sure miss the people and warmth of India. Hope to go back soon! |

One of the things we learned was to trust Deepak when making transportation connections. Initially we pushed his time recommendations a little, but learned our lesson once going to Old Delhi station. He said allow 90 min., but never having gone there, we thought that was a bit too much and compromised on 75 minutes. All was well until we were with a km. of the station. That last km. took almost 45 minutes to traverse and they had closed off parking. If it weren't for Deepak calling a porter and telling him to hustle us to our train, we would have missed it. After that we paid better heed to his time recommendations. I suspect around New Years that you may run into similar traffic. Have a great time, hope you can connect with him. If you do, tell him Will says "Hi".
