Street food vendor in Old Delhi
Delhi's street food vendors are a way of life
Hot roadside snacks in Delhi could soon be a thing of the past under a plan to clean up the Indian capital's streets.

The Supreme Court has passed an order to ban the cooking of food at stalls along the roadside.

Supreme Court bans cooked street food in Delhi

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - The Supreme Court on Thursday banned street sellers from cooking food on the pavements of New Delhi to clean up India's chaotic capital.

The ban will hit at the heart of daily customs of thousands of eaters in the capital, where breakfasts and lunches like pan-fried parathas and samosas cooked in vats of hot oil are served on the streets to hungry customers.

One exception will be made for the quintessential Indian tea vendors, although the court says they must now serve their drinks in disposable glasses and cups.

i don't eat street food, but i still find this a bit sad for all the vendors who feed their families by feeding delhites.

i understand wanting to use disposable glasses and cups; i've seen the way that some vendors wash theirs but steaming hot chai in plastic cups sux. not only is it an environmental hazard, but it's also not such a good idea to drink piping hot liquids from plastic. and it's a bit difficult to wrap your hand around those hot cups!

Paranthe waali gali is no street food..they have proper joints..

so even though it will hit Delhi belly (pun intented), but still it will not go completely out of business...

many of the chats are are made by just mixing the pre-cooked indegrients..

So anything that can be cooked and stored ..can be sold..

But it's not fresh. It could have been sitting there all day and had a thousand flies sitting on it before you buy it.
