I'll tell you if that's funny after I've survived my first week in Delhi!

Jokes like that - sometimes they hide the truth - in Malta the "joke" is that you don't drive on the left, you drive in the shade. The sun is so fierce, that when there's no traffic around, people really do drive in the shade, it is more than a joke. I have done it myself!

Good point, especially if it's someone's house. Well, I know they live in this street somewhere...

As well as address, directions, etc, get a landmark!

One of the biggest problems with directions is the inability to comprehend the words "I'm coming from the other direction"...

I had this phone conversation with my wife once:

Me: "I'm standing outside your favourite shoe shop, how do I get to xyz street?"

Her: "It's off the same street, you just go there"

Me: "Yes, I know, but if you just came out of that shoe shop, would you turn right or left?"

Her: "It is nearby; you just go there."

Me: "But... But... OK, see you later, bye"

English, Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi.
How's your Nastaliq and Gurmukhi coming along?

Very useful when following the Eicher and not wanting to stop every km.

For example if i had to give you directions from South Ex to Defence Colony (less than 1 Km)....it would be left at flyover and then right at the traffic light.....if you had to go via street names...you would need to remember atleast 3...with names that are not easy to pronounce!!

What's so difficult about BHISHMA PITAMAH Marg?
Ok, but you can't be complaining about RING ROAD?

That first one, we solved that problem decades ago when my mom renamed it - Timber Road! I'm sure you know why.

my partner found a surprisingly detailed street map covering the Delhi area, it even shows house numbers!
Would love to have such maybe combined with a satnav system..

Hi everybody,

It's called an Eicher map if you ever want to ask for one at a book store (named after the company that puts it out) If you're going to spend any time in Delhi off the tourist circuit it's very worth it. Puts you more in charge of where you're going, even if you can only figure out half of the details in advance.

As for giving rickshaw-wallahs directions, I usually start with the big neighborhood (eg, Defence Colony) then you give them the block, as in A-block, b-block, etc. That's how the neighborhoods are often organized. If the driver himself doesn't know where the block is, just get to the neighborhood, have him pull over, and ask a local.

Even if there are street names (and that's iffy), very few people know any apart from the major ones.

Infact You will not find ring road in Maps as it would be Mahatma Gandhi Marg, and I bet half of the delhiites would not know that.

Secondly how many Mahatma Gandhi Margs can you recall ??

And forget about the outer ring road - Dr.Hegdewar (Sp??) Marg

Yep, the one going north from junction of RR, Andrews Ganj, South Ex - past all the timber shops!

The Eicher usually lists both names for all the renamed roads where the old names are still popular like RR, ORR, Najafgarh Rd, etc
