OK, Rs500 may be OK for Delhi, but I wonder, how much would a local pay to hire an auto for 6 hours, local journeys only?

No, I didn't get his telephone number, I was surprised to get such a good quote, but Bikaner hasn't picked up the bad habits towards tourists yet, so I was just assuming that those prices were standard for non touristy areas, it was only later in my trip I realised how good that price was.

But there was one main reason I didn't ask for his number.

He was crazy, the worst I've ever had, I constantly thought he was going to hit a pedestrian, and at a high speed as well, I'm also aware that if he did hit someone, and then indicated that the foreigners wanted to go fast, we'd be in a dangerous situation, so for that reason, I wouldn't recommend him.

I would advise: find out the cost of a car for the same period: a small, non-ac car. Do not pay an auto driver more than 2/3rds of that. I once would have said half, but I do not think that will get you anywhere in Chennai now.

I've said this before, but here goes again:

Unless you are doing a number of trips, which short stops, it is almost never worth paying a driver to sit and do nothing for several hours.

Exceptions:

--- you are going a distance that will be Rs.100 or more each way, and the driver is willing to wait for free.

--- you are going to out somewhere late at night, or where autos may not be readily available.

There is a certain raw experience of a place to be had travelling by auto, set against the relative insulation of a car, even with the windows open. I still enjoy my now-rare auto trips. You may choose to take an auto for this very reason.

Otherwise, if they are going to start charging the same as taxis, take the taxi and have the comfort.

But, if you can find a reasonable guy who feeds doggies --- its a no-brainer

Great story Kengonetoindia. If you can, try to take a photo of the man and post it so I can look for him the next time I'm at CP.

Is he good-looking and/or kind to animals? Failing that, was it a good-looking autorickshaw? These are the criteria for Mr Tuktuk 2008.

Have you told this story before Capt and I missed it?!

Delhi's Most Beautiful Phone Number

You may recall my earlier post "Delhi's Most Beautiful Rickshaw Driver" (I've repeated the posting, below). The response to that post was incredible and I was so excited that Sanjeep would be getting lots of calls since I posted his cell number - nearly a thousand folks read that posting.

BUT I now find out that he had to get a new number since the cell phone I gave him needed to be topped up and he couldn't do that without me being there. But now I'm here again and we've fixed the problem.

In any case, he now has a new phone and a new number and it is 9311743424. Can anyone at IndiaMike change the number on my earlier post to the correct, new number?

Believe me, this guy is a prince. And he's the most honest and best driver I've ever encountered in my years in India. Do yourself a favor if you're in the Connaught Place/main bazaar environs and call Sanjeep if you need a rickshaw. You won't regret it friends. BTW he's still feeding those dogs, every day.

Mod Note:

Yes, we can and will correct the number in the opening post, but... no need to repeat it, and one thread is enough

thats awesome

thats so aweosme..
my co-worker just sent me the link as she knew i would really enjoy reading it - and i did!!!

i just sent it to a few friends.
I only wish there were more people who did that.
I had a few strays ( i had named them all) where i used to live in Pune. We moved from that area but i would go there and check on them.

Now that i am in the US, i make my mom go and check in on them to make sure there are ok and healthy. I was really glad to hear that there are are a few famlies there that feed them now.

When ever i'm here for vacation, I love to go there and whistle for them.

Its amazing...they all still come running...!!!

i miss them but i am glad they are doing ok

being a hindi and urdu speaker i have had some very interesting discussions with delhi rickshaw valas while travelling as a passenger .One was a BJP hindutva vala, another was a former gem cutter who worked in bombay and was from Bihar basically and spoke with a real Bhojpuri accent.
Some of them are not all bad. You get a the usual snakes too.
