Delhi: Need to buy winter clothing
Can someone suggest where should I go to buy good but not exhorbitantly priced winter garments in Delhi?
Even street markets would do so long as the stuff does not look too cheap as I will be wearing them to office. I have just shifted from Mumbai and as we all know there is nothing called winter in my hometown so I need to invest in some basic sweaters n stuff. All suggestions are welcome. I live in South Delhi.Last edited by machadinha : Nov 19th, 2007 at 09:17. Reason: adjusted title |

Both Karol Bagh and Janpath have street markets where racks of jackets and warm sweaters etc. will be - with winter coming on my guess is that they will have started to put out winter stuff now.Karol Bagh street markets for clothing are in Ajmal Khan Road, not far from Metro station. Find Janpath market one block back from Connaught Circus - some Delhi IM'er will come to my aid here with proper landmarks for you!
My other thought is that there is probably some Tibetan markets for clothing in Delhi - they have great stuff at not an expensive price. Western clothing also is in abundance in Sarojini Nagar market - South Delhi. Here you can also strike some good bargains.

You get high quality woollen sweaters with some minor defects in a large open street market before you come to Tibetan Market (that is an area name on Janpath close to Connaught Place).

I have used sweaters and jackets (you will need them in the bitterly cold winter of Delhi) from Janpath and they last long, very long... and are completely adequate for the winter here. The options available in terms of colour and design are plentiferous and you should, with a little patience, be able to find something worthy of office-wear.
Coming from Mumbai and considering that winter has not yet set in, you may be tempted to go for lighter sweaters but believe me, I have spent 6 winters in Delhi, you would need the heavy, thick-set sweaters to bear Delhi winter. Let me not scare you however, bitterly cold as it is, it becomes enjoyable after a while and the fast pace of the city carries the winter in its stride and life goes on as sprightly as ever well...I am new to this forum and this post seems to be on the longer side... I'll try to make it more concise henceforth... Sid |

Don't worry about long post Sid, I'm always rambling on! Welcome to IM and glad to hear my suggestion of Janpath street markets being confirmed! Also good prices, I took back some cargo type pants for the boys here (my nephews) and they were only around 100 rupees. Very good quality too.

Thanks for the welcome, Aishah and it really feels a welcome place to be...I feel at home here...just a few hours back I had put up a post about going to Bharatpur and I am overwhelmed by the response...my queries were answered exactly as I'd have liked them to. Wow!
And yes, Janpath is real cheap...and consistently so. In a large shop you never know on which item the guy is fleecing you (I'm a very poor bargainer) but here it's one cheap price and no bargaining. But a caveat is in order here: You must check for any defect because getting a refund may be dicey though I have never tried it. |

Hello Everyone,
Thanks for the wonderful suggestions. I realize that Sid has pointed out that I have not responded to all the answers I got. Actually, I wanted to respond as soon as I got the first one but I was clicking the "Quote" button and getting all confused. My logic in trying that was - I should reply to the specific post. Please forgive my stupidity I am new to this forum. It just struck me that I should use the quick reply box. Once again thanks for alllll great options. This weekend is booked for winter clothes shopping! BTW Aishah waghobha is a she . |

Sorry Waghoba! If it's any consolation I've been marginally longer than you as a member and i still haven't worked out how to do the quote business! Just don't seem to have time to figure it out! Anyway, welcome to IM and happy shopping this weekend - let us know how you went. Just thinking now I know you are a 'she' maybe Sarojini Nagar would have a lot more choice than Janpath markets for you.
