somehow I dont like the concept of these bookstores...its not because I am against them...

Its simply that with a bit more of effort I tend to save few hundred rupees that I spend on Nai Sarak...no one in Delhi OR largely India can exceed the discounts offered on Nai Sarak...

And yes in Inda you get books specifically published for India, Nepal, Banglaseh etc...so they are cheap indeed as compared to West.

and if you are looking for curriculum books, like the ones used by students on universities and colleges then Nai Sadak and Darya Ganj are heaven...almost all the small and big stores in Delhi, North India and many parts of India..get their supply from Nai Sarak itself..

but does anyone have any contact information for any of the places for ordering books? I think, considering I am looking for a specific list of publications, I would be better off ordering them in advance rather than going on a wild goose chase through the backstreets of Delhi!!

Ariel, I work in academics and my bet is that if your requirements are specific, chances of finding such books in bookstore stocks are not that great. Even among texts the more popular ones will be available.

British Council library or walking into one of the Delhi University library would be your best bet as far as my experience goes.

And do let us know how did your book hunt go.

mridula-- can't I order them?

I've been in contact with the British Council Library but they only have about half of the books I need.

As for the Delhi University Library, I was told you need to be a resident. I will only be in Delhi for four days, so that, unfortunately, appears to be out of the question. They also told me they only allow "scholars" to use their facilities and not graduate students, which was both mystifying and sort of insulting. What do they think graduate students are??

Ariel, welcome to the Indian notion of academics If the British council has only half of them, then I can safely bet that you may not get them in book stores. About ordering, you could try but there would be a lead time getting those?

Also there is another university JNU in Delhi and as they offer PG courses, they may be a bit more sympathetic to a graduate student. If it would have been management books, I could have been of more help.

Try getting a letter of introduction from your Department Chair or Dean which says you are a "scholar". Some percent of Indian university professors (lecturers, etc.) do not have PhDs but are considered academics.

JNU is just great...you simply need a letter of introduction and you id card and the staff in the central library will get you a temproary id card...very helful people there....will guide you to the right floor and section and even the shelf.........

i belong to a different university but i was amazed by the help they offered... you can browse thorugh all the 7 floors of the central library freely...

Spend half a day at the book fair, most of the pubishers will be there under one roof (well, 2 or 3 adjoining ones). If u find the titles u need, u can have them sent to u even if all of them are not in stock (at the fair).
