Delhi in either April May or June - are we mad?

Hi folks

This is my first post/thread so please be kind! Also mods if you feel this would be better posted in another section please feel free to move the thread.

I will give you the background to our plans before I ask the main question(s) so bear with me please...

We are off to India in Jan 08 for around about 1 year backpacking. We are a couple in our 30's. We are starting in Mumbai in Jan and then heading to Goa (been there 4 times before but nowhere else in India) for 1 month or so and then will make our way slowly through Karnataka and then towards Kerala.

We have to fly back to the UK for the last week of March and first week of April. We have already booked flight back to Uk from Mumbai on 25th March (will take internal flight from Kerala to Mumbai).

When we fly back to India in April (not yet booked flights for this part) we are not sure where to head. Our dilemma is that we will need to leave India again in June/July to renew our visa's and will probably go to Nepal to do so. Therefore we thought it may be best to be in the northern part of India from April until our visa's run out. However from what I can gather April - Jun/July is the very hottest time of year.

So my questions are..... (getting to the point now!)

Am I correct in saying this is the hottest time of year and if so would be be mad to come to Delhi then Rajasthan and Punjab area at this time of year?

If the answer to the above is yes and yes where would all you suggest we head for instead?

I have tons and tons of research to do in terms of where else we want to see but other places we will definately head to at some stage during the year are Chennai and Mamallapuram as we will be helping a friend who runs a charity there, but we can go there anytime as she is always grateful for any help.

Your thoughts and comments will be gratefully received.

Many thanks

Sian (dogfish).

> Are we mad?

Yes.

Memories are vivid of staring out of the AC car at people standing in the sun in 45C heat and looking more dead than alive.

How about somewhere cooler in the north...hills stations like Darjeeling, Mussoorie, Simla. There are cooler hill stations in many parts of India. Ooty, Kodicanal. All cooler.

Lightbulb mmm...

A bit hot, yeah; I'd say. I was in Jaipur for 6 months and had to get out north in April. Pretty fuckin' hot, but, if you can deal with it then by all means...

One (hyphened) word: air-conditioning.

It failed once in the car this April and almost immediately my brain felt like pancake batter and I started falling asleep.

There's a Nepal border crossing in Uttaranchal (Banbassa- it's still open as far as I know?) perhaps you could head there? It's a bit out of the way, but it would be more comfortable heatwise to head up into the hills and cross into Nepal nearby.

There is no better place then Himalaya in the summer between april-july.

Himalaya has spead from north-west to north east on top of india.

Some of the region worth trekking are Leh-Ladakh(if u are bit experienced),
Himachal Pradesh has so many - Simla-Kufri, Kullu-Manali-Rohtang, Dharamshala and Mcdeongang,
Rishikesh and the route to Starting point of Ganga, Nepal, Sikkim etc.

Idea is just visit delhi to take a flight or train if needed otherwise be on top of himalaya....till u will run in need for some heat.....
