Delhi: I need a drink. Specifically...
I miss beer. Yes, there's nothing like a cold Kingfisher on a hot day, but I miss brews from the non-lager family. What I wouldn't give for a nice brown ale right now... is there anywhere in Delhi with a beer selection that goes beyond Heineken and Corona?

Ask for Haywards Black. Not sure if it's available in Delhi. It's stout and strong

Guinness is available in delhi as well in a few select places but is expensive. Lodi Restaurant is one place in South Delhi where this is available.

Let's go beyond Guinness. Let's think Sam Adams or Newcastle Brown. Don't tell me my salvation lies in a flight to London... surely some restaurant somewhere in this country must import a case or two of beer with all their fancy French wine...

Well Samuel Adams might be pushing your luck a bit ..... but why not try the polo lounge at the Hyatt Regency and/or other equivalent 5* deluxe lounge. They usually have a small but tasty selection of Imported Beers to slurp down. If you do find a nice amber or darker brew to your liking - then ask the food & beverage manager for the importer's contact information (tell him you are having a large party etc.) as you would like to deal directly with this distributor. Viola - you now have an a solid beer contact who's got his ear to the ground of all things currently available in the Delhi market ...... rather than flying to Singapore or London - that's what I would do first.

I agree 5 star hotels would be the best bet.Try Dublin at ITC Maurya Hotel at Chankyapuri, Shangri la, and Taj Mahal hotel. Imperial and Hotel Janpath would also be good bet.
Apart from this the pub called DV8 at Regal Building in CP also have wider selection of beers when compared to other pubs in that area. All the best and do post back on your hunt.

I was hoping my quest wouldn't have to pass through the fancy hotels. I guess I'll have to make a choice: a dry throat or a dry wallet.

My favourite beer is Guiness and it happens to be available only in 5 star places in Delhi....the liquor shops are still not stocking them unlike Bangalore/Mumbai...at 500 bucks or so for a can at a 5* its not something one can do often...especially with the amount i can drink up |

Has the microbrewery/brew-pub phenomenon hit India yet? Now there's an entrepreneurial opportunity for somebody, at least in metros with a trendy scene! I could see this taking off in Mumbai, Bangalore and the Delhi area, maybe Pune, or holiday spots like Mussorie or Shimla, or other tourist-heavy towns (McLeod Ganj, Gangtok...)
Check out this website about brewpubs and microbreweries in the U.S.: http://www.brewpubzone.com/ |
