Its as safe as it gets...you need to understand that being Capital of a major democracy in the world it is put on Alert everytime something happens in the country, around the world, any threat is there, any festival is there..
So we are used to these things and life goes on normal even in critical alerts...I remember the red alert after the Attack on parliament in December 2001, it only impacted a certain part of Delhi and rest of the life moved on smoothly.. |

And as dangerous as it gets... so far as it can be said of any big city these days?
But why not just ask your neighbours? Oh! You did! You asked Shashank! ![]()

And I'm off in 2 days too! But I think we just get on with things in spite of these alerts, be sensible and hope for the best. Desertrose if you're there on Dec 8th come to IM Meet-up, Costa's Coffee House, Connaught Place from 5.30 p.m. onwards!!

I'm a relatively recent Delhi resident - and I tend to find out more about the alerts on IM then I do out on the street! Aside from the occasional increase in guards in various places - you would hardly know there was a perceived threat increase somewhere in india. My theory is that most people here are just trying to survive the traffic - let alone anything else after that!
So yes - it appears fine outside (except for the nutty traffic)! |

I saw the Alert on NDTV yesterday but didn't take too much notice of it. Just thought there will be more police around the airport and railway stations.. As bb says, surviving the traffic is bad enough!!

Yeah, terrorists tend to strike when u least expect it, though. Not when there's a high alert.
New York, Madrid, London, Mumbai '03, Bangalore, Mumbai '05, Delhi, Varanasi, Hyderabad '07, Lucknow/Varanasi/Faizabad, Hyderabad '07......if it's not your turn, it's not your turn. Last edited by Dilliwala : Dec 5th, 2007 at 22:10. |

I just returned from Delhi 2 weeks ago and I have to tell you I felt completely safe there. I even got lost in back alleys in Old Delhi walking for a few hours and never had a single problem. Lots of police in the right places, metal detectors going into the subway, etc.
I wouldn't worry about it except for the traffic as others have said! Lars |

Dear All,
I don't think there is a fear of a terrorist incident, while the possibility is certainly there the probability is quite remote! Nevertheless, the REAL DANGER lies in the horrendous traffic, at its peak the New Delhi buses would kill some 1,000 pedestrians per year! Fortunately they are being phased out by the metro! Still, this is a homicide rate higher than that in NYC! So put things in correcr perspective, New Delhi is a safe city in terms of murder, assult, muggings, etc but the real threats are on the roads and the air (air pollution) should you extend your stay! |

I think alerts are a political thing, so that if something happened they can say, well we said so. But for the mass of people, for the many individuals, it is hardly dangerous even if something did happen. I have been in Colombo a lot when terrorist strikes were imminent. In a non-active war-zone you only realize that it is dangerous from the alerts, certainly not from what you experience out in the streets. So it comes down to a probability count. If a bus is a target when I happen to be on a bus, but there are ten thousand buses around, the probability that it hits me is still small. Much more so if time is added as a factor. Terrorism works with the fear factor, and requires a small attack once in a while to keep its credibility working.

Yesterday travelling around Delhi - there is really no difference to any other time I have been here. In fact I was hardly aware that extra security is in place - just another normal day for everyone! With the same terrible traffic!
