Delhi Hotel Recommendations Please...

hey all...i'm heading up to delhi this december and i'm having so much trouble deciding on a reasonably good place to stay. My budget is somewhat around 2800 - 3000 (inr). Because of all the conflicting reviews online, i'm a little apprehensive on picking one. i've come across hotel 55, and express 66 which i thought looked ok but after stumbling on more reviews, i'm now not too sure. Cld anyone out there pls help me out. It's my first trip to india with the wife and I don't want a place that will be too shady or noisy since i'm going with her. Help! thanks...

With your budget, jmf1002, some places that I know and maintain a good standard are Bajaj Indian Homestay, and Swati Deluxe - both of these are in Karol Bagh area. I've been to the restaurant of Hotel Alka - very good food, clean and nice atmosphere - but don't know what the rooms are like - this one is in Connaught Place area. Friends of mine are booking Yatri House for their stay later, they seem to think this is good. (website:www.yatrihouse.com) All the places mentioned here have contact details on the Hotels listed for Delhi in this Forum. Click on 'Hotels' on the red bar at the top of the page.

thanks Aishah. I've sent enquiries to both your recommended hotels. However, was just wondering, which is better: karol bagh or pahaganj? Again, lots of conflicting reviews online. lonely planet seems to hint that pahaganj is awfully crowded and dodgy. but karol bagh on the map seems to a little distant from central.

I stayed at Hotel Tara Palace in Old Delhi. I really liked the area, and the hotel was clean and comfortable and Rs 1500 a night. But it's a bit out of the centre if that's what you're looking for.

Check tripadvisor.com for some good reviews.

Swati Deluxe, and I think Bajaj Homestay, are very close to the Metro which will take you fast into Rajiv Chowk, the inner circle of Connaught Place, for around 8rupees per person. No haggling with rickshaw drivers etc. Yatri House is closer, right near RK Ashram Metro station, same line as the Karol Bagh station. It's on the quieter side of Paharganj, and would be fine there. The side near New Delhi railway station is the one more noisy and busy. Karol Bagh also has a nice market, fairly busy but doable. And you can always take the Metro from the station there to Rajouri Garden which is a quieter, cleaner market with very nice shops.

Hi jmf1002, For several years Delhi had/has been really short of rooms in your price range. Just remembering that inflation since I was there last, early 2007, may have changed things pricewise.

I stayed in Hotel 55 in 2003 and in Alka overnight last year. Both were overpriced I think but the locations were convenient. I liked places in Sunder Nagar but they are usually full and more expensive. Florence Inn in Karol Bagh is well worth its price if you can book there.

Last year I fell back on Paharganj as no better areas had rooms. I found the atmosphere a lot of fun and was glad to pay below
R.500 per night.
