Delhi Hotel: Avoid the Regent Continental in Karol Bagh

We had stayed there previously on many occasions. However, it seems that the management has changed and so have the rates.

I had made the reservations through the hotel's website and nowhere on it did it have any policy regarding cancellations. In spite of that, I had called 24 hours earlier to change our reservations by two days. On the phone, I was told everything was ok. Thankfully, I got the name of the person who took the call.

Well, guess what? When I got there on the new date I was told that since I had only cancelled 24 hours in advance I would have to pay for the days that I had not stayed at the hotel! can you believe this? So I asked the receptionist how many hours do they need for cancellation and he told me more than 24. So I asked: 48 hours? 72 hours? More? He could not give me an answer. So he sent me to the "big boss". The big boss tried really hard to intimidate me. When that did not work, he tried to be really sweet and when that did not work, he tried to "blackmail" me. He said that he was going to waive the extra days' payment if I agreed to take one of their tours to Rajasthan or anywhere else. When that failed, he tried to sell me their New Year bash tickets. I refused and I told him either to take my business for the few days that I was staying there or he gets nothing at all. When he saw that I meant it, he agreed that I did not have to pay for the extra days that I had ALREADY cancelled.

And that's not all. When I was checking out they quoted me a different rate than the one I had received earlier during the booking. Fortunately, I still had the print-outs and showed it to them. while I was settling my bill, there was another guest who had been double charged for her entire stay. it seems that she was in one room but decided to move to another one that was quieter and she was being charged for both rooms for her entire stay!

I would strongly urge people not to go there. Also, the breakfast buffet is a waste of time. Cold toast and yogurt mostly.

First of all - did you pay these people upfront? Not recommended for any hotel in India - or for that matter anywhere.

Secondly, I am sure there are many good hotels & the majority of people very honourable in Karol Bagh. But everytime I hear of a hotel scam or taxi cum hotel scam it almost always is muttered in the same breath with the words Karol Bagh.

Play fair people IndiaMike is watching you.

Yeah, like my family said: they did not know who they were dealing with! I was not about to let them twist my arm AFTER I had given them 24 hours notice.

But like I said earlier, we had stayed there previously and so had other members of our family. One of them even turned up at the hotel without any reservations. We never had any problem, but this new management team is horrible. They should really take "Hotel Management 101"!!

No I did not pay upfront even though the REgent had requested my credit card number. I was not about to give that out!!

And I also made sure to pay in cash just to avoid any funny charges to my credit card.

Having said this, the hotel Clark International has been highly recommended by several books/websites even though it is in Karol Bagh. and on my last day there I did check out another hotel that looks ok. Will try it next time. Besides where else can you stay in Delhi that is not Paharganj and not too expensive either??
