Delhi fog info

Could anyone give me some information about the 'Delhi fog'?

I've heard it's usually a problem (affecting transport) between about 15th December till 15th January, is this true?

What areas are usually affected, only Delhi? or much larger areas of north India?

Many thanks.

Fog in north India is usually during the winter months.. I would offhand say late Nov to mid Feb, but a Delhi member would have more accurate info. Fog is worst early morning and then late evening/night as far as flights and train schedules are concerned.

That said, maybe because of the recent snowfall in the hills, flights have been affected by fog a few days ago in Delhi, in March. But this is unusual.

Usually, in winter, there is a fair amount of fog in many parts of North India.. Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, parts of UP, Uttaranchal, Jammu & Kashmir included.

Trains and flights are often delayed, and travelling by road can be sometimes hair raising.

Steven -

Captain has outlined the situation. The fog in Delhi can be very thick/dense - and reduce visibility significantly. The air traffic is often badly affected, but that is partly due to lack of equipment / training. [The same level of fog does not cause nearly as much disruption in London as it does in Delhi.] Due to its central location, the air travel in India in Dec / Jan is not terribly reliable in schedule.

Thanks everyone for the great info.

So a train going Jaipur, Alwar, Rewari, Hisar, Ludhiana, Amritsar wouldn't escape the fog?

Normally, no. But sometimes you get lucky.

The fog can be very bad. I remember driving to Agra with zero visibility in December; you couldnt see more than six feet.

Plenty of crashes on the way because of novices and idiots on the road, driving without keeping any response time in mind.

Even the trains coming from South of Delhi is affected. I was supposed to take 2415 Indore Nizamuddin Intercity express on 31st Jan (or maybe 1st Feb) which is supposed to reach Nizamuddin early morning at 5 or 6 AM.

I found out that 2-3 days ago it has been delayed 3 hours due to fog. So I took an evening flight a day ago for an early morning US embassy appointment.

Fortunately these days the fog menace is much less than what it used to be. Since all public transportation in Delhi was forced to use CNG only the smog that blinded us in winter has gone for good. I remember those days when we didn't have Sun for weeks and I couldn't see my car parked just a floor below and drove to work following the tail beam of the car in front of me. But who can tell what will happen next year? I went to Solan in mid March sans my jacket and it was rain & snow... two feet of snow in Shimla in mid March.... think of it !!!!
