Delhi experts help please? Which day of the week to go out of Delhi
We will be in Delhi from a Saturday to Saturday in Jan 08 BUT on one night and 2 days of that we want to go to Amritsar (early train up and evening train back the next day. I have in the back of my mind that there are things on or open or even closed on certain nights or days in Delhi - Thursday night springs to mind but I don't know what????Qutb Minar????? I need to book the accom at both ends.
Anyone have any ideas about when NOT to leave Delhi - or even when to be in Amritsar...... I need to check if the border ceremony/ temple etc is on/open every day too, and the trains.. I'll do that now. Thanks!!!!!!! |

Alot of the major touristy markets are closed on Sunday but the monuments, as far as I know, are opened sunrise to sunset 7 days a week. So unless there is some specific function that you would like to attend that occurs on a certain night of the week - then you should be not too restricted as to your Amritsar excursion.

Thats it - I thought I read somewhere that there was something on Thursday nights at least - but I've read stuff in so many places I can't find it.

There is Qualli singing on Thursday nights in Delhi; I've forgotten the location but you might try searching the forum for that.

That's it I think .. someone said its not to be missed. That's the only trouble with IM isn't it - you skip over things in forums and they lodge in the back of your mind and then you can't find them again!

Thanks - that is the thread I was looking for, the trouble with searching is all the different spellings. So we'll stay in Delhi Thursday night.

Thanks - I looked at the India Groove Train Finder (!!!!!! Great site!!!!) and I think we'll take the 7.20 Shatabdi on the Monday - gets in at 1.30, check in, walk around for an hour or so, catch a taxi to the border ceremony. Get back to Amritsar and see the temple at night, including I hope the 9.15pm ceremony with the book. Get up early, see the temple in the early morning and spend some hours there, have a wander around Amritsar, then catch the 5.00 pm Shatabdi back to Delhi and bed - gets in at 10.40, not too bad. I guess you can eat on this train? We can have a nap too, play some cards, read - might be quite restful really.
I hate to squish Amritsar like that but otherwise we will not have 4 full days in Delhi. |

Monuments & museums are not open all seven days. Many markets are open on Sundays. I don't know what kind of shopping you have in mind. If it is ethenic stuff do visit Dilli Haat.
There will be lot of traffic diversions in Delhi on 26th. Jan but only till noon and after that it gets back to normal. Your Shatabdi Exp. train ticket includes food and beverages. Dinner will be served on your return journey by Shatabdi. It is a good train, comfortable & reliable... go for it. |
