Delhi Duty Free Shop--no longer good?
Hi all,
Am arriving in Delhi on the 27th, for a long trip. We were going to pick up some liquor as gifts at the duty free at the Delhi airport when we arrive , but I saw something on another site that the place has become a ripoff. Is there any truth to this? Martin |

At one time they were a decent deal (not much more expensive than a liquor store at home and it was more convenient to buy at the IGI airport than haul booze from home).

its only good for last minute purchases. They are generally a rip off. Although, Singapore duty free gurantees lowest prices.. i wonder you verify that after the plane has left..

Well that is discouraging but it is better to find out here then when I get there. I want to pick up a couple of bottles of Dewars black label for two friends who are doing BIG favors for us.
thanks, Martin |

Martin,
One of the cheapest places in the world for alcohol is the US. Try Costco or Trader Joes for the best deals. Their prices will be at those at the duty frees. Johnnie Walker or Chivas Regal are the preferred brand by Indians. |

I dont think Delhi duty free is a rip off at all. Prices are quite competitive. I found them to be lower than most of the European airports i have visited in the recent past and at par with singapore except for a couple of deals on select brands. The problem is that there is not much variety at Delhi airport.

I think it is a fairly decent place for buying alcohol (or it was till last year). For the brands that make for good gifts in India, I have not seen any other place that is consistently cheaper. Bangkok and Singapore come close. Europe is generally way more expensive. For the convenience that you get (shop as you wait for your luggage to show up!), I don't think there are many better options. Now if you are looking for something fancy, Delhi is perhaps not the best place.
It would be useful to know if there has been a drastic change in the prices recently. |

I didn't check liquor prices at the Delhi dutyfree shop, but cigarettes are US$10.00 per carton LESS than they were in Germany or the US.

If you are not looking for somthing fancy or some particular stuff, the booze shop at the arrival hall is a good place to pick up a bottle or two for gifting, good price compared to other places specially Europe. 2 lires of alcohol is permitted per person.
