dakotus So is that really crap that they throw on your shoes?

Its strange because when I was in Delhi 2 years ago this happened to me. I wiped it off with something and threw it away. It was on the top of my shoe and not the bottom.
It is not crap, think about it how does crap that big just happen to land on your shoe, some little sharp shooter flicks a dollop of mixed shoe creams to the right colour tones right on to the toe of your shoes and amazingly a shoe shine wallah appears all concerned about the state of your shoes. Holding his nose, looking like he is about to be sick due to the grossness of it all, abusing the monkey's, none in sight of course and trying to charge Rs400/ for the service.

Rub it in his hair!!!!

those little $hits. Between that and the attempted pick pocketing by 10 year old boys while getting my shoes shined, Id have to say Goa was the best part of my trip to India. Delhi was a blast aside from the flying shoe polish.

Actually the stuff on my shoe was shit, I know that because I cleaned it myself. But anyawy, I am in Paharganj now and feel much better here with other backpackers. Despite the fact that I have a little "delhi belly" I enjoy my time here and wait for my train to Varanasi...

I feel I must take part in this very vital debate about the origins of what actually goes on the shoe. It has happened to me twice so I have had a chance to examine it.

I think it is watered down cowshit, a readily available substance in the neighbourhood (at the moment). Of course this is an inoffensive thing to Indians and those of us who grew up on farms, but causes blind panic in foreign city dwellers and in many cases causes them to reach for their wallets.

It must be one of the longest running scams in the world by now. Good to hear it's still running.

Well if it is 'shit' how is it that they have so much on hand and why is it the same colour as the mix in a jar on the shoe wallahs tray and why does it smell and feel like shoe cream and all they do is wipe and polish and say thank you very much. NEXT! When I cleaned the second lot off myself beside the police stand glaring menacingly at the shoe wallah it was shoe cream, then again they might have run out of pooh and had to improvise in order to generate business.

Didn't you recently mention something about the price of a couple of latte coffees and the relativity of it all?
