Post Delhi Debit Cards

Hello all!
I have searched and read many threads on ATMs in Delhi, but none with up-to-date information..

Has anyone had recent success using a Canadian Royal Bank (RBC) debit card in ATMs in New Delhi? Up until recently I have assumed it would work, but I need to make sure as I will be leaving in 3 weeks!

Thanks!

Your debit card will most likely not work at many ATMs. My Scotia Bank (Canadian) debit card was not accepted at many ATMs. The only bank/ATM that would accept my debit card (affiliated with Interac/Plus)was HDFC.

As long as my debit card works in some ATMs then I will be happy I guess I'll just take out large lump-sums.
RBC debit cards are part of the Interac/PLUS network only so hopefully it'll work out!

If you're unsure about it (have you called your bank? Checked the web whether the logos on your card will be accepted by Indian ATM's?) and if you hadn't thought of it yet, I'd suggest looking into some alternative form of money. I.e., traveler's cheques, other card, whatever.

You obviously don't wanna stand there with no money.

rmur - I don't know about Canadian cards; but my Australian Credit Union Visa debit card (Plus network) works almost everywhere. I do have an overdraft facility attached to it - maybe that makes a difference.

If you can find a Citybank, they work. Best bet is your credit card - cash advances work at almost any ATM.

Visa linked to savings account (and you press 'savings' at the ATM) works everywhere. If you have a Visa, Cirrus or Maestro logo on your card it should work. Also ensure your bank has enabled it for overseas transactions.

Well I will give you up to date information. Your RBC debit card will work only on HDFC bank ATMs. It will not work on the other major Indian bank ATMs belonging to ICICI, Axis bank, SBI etc. The exact same goes for TDCanadatrust debit cards.

It HAS to be the case that the use of a debit/credit/ATM card, under normal computer-network availability and individual machine proper functioning is solely dependent on the financial networks the machine is connected to and the financial networks that the card is part of. Hence all the Plus, Maestro, Cirrus biz. That is why you should look at all the symbols at the back of your card and match them up with the symbols with displayed on the ATM machine. If you get a match, proceed.

The actual bank you have an account at and the actual bank /location( which may not be a bank but a supermarket) that a ATM is at is not relevant ( Fees are quite a different matter of course).

At least in theory this is for sure - can we at least establish that that is the way this stuff is actually organized ?

Be aware that when you get your travelex card you are paying a serious percentage to Travelex!!!

Seems to me to sum it up pretty nicely, yes

(However, something can surely be said about card X from bank Z carrying the necessary logos or not, and/or what other banks [supermarket etc. machines will still be operated by some bank or another, at least where I live] that specific card may or may not match up with. Like GoanCanuck did here.)

btw I don't know anything about this Travelex and/or its links to Thomas Cook, but a poster recently was far from impressed with either or both of them: what's a normal price? (Aka "Still waiting for a refund from Travelex.")

Well the official responce from Royal Bank is that my debit card will work on all overseas ATMs that are associated with the PLUS network.
Here is the official list of PLUS bank ATMs in Delhi:
ABN AMRO BANK N.V.
ALLAHABAD BANK
ANDHRA BANK
AXIS BANK LIMITED
BANK OF BARODA
BANKING
CANARA BANK
CENTURION BANK OF PUNJAB LIMITED
CITISHARE CORPORATION
CORPORATION BANK
DEUTSCHE BANK AG
HDFC BANK LIMITED
HONGKONG AND SHANGHAI BANKING CORPORATION
IDBI BANK LTD.
INDIAN OVERSEAS BANK
KARNATAKA BANK LIMITED
KOTAK MAHINDRA BANK LTD
ORIENTAL BANK OF COMMERCE
STANDARD CHARTERED GRINDLAYS BANK LIMITED
STATE BANK OF INDIA
SYNDICATE BANK
THE FEDERAL BANK LTD

Out of all those that 'offically' work, all I need is one!

I got a similar "official" response (form e-mail) from TD Canada Trust. I found that few of the recommended banks accepted my debit card, and the ones that did might work in one city, but not another. Even if the ATM displayed the PLUS logo.

HDFC and Citybank seemed to be the only banks which consistently accepted my card.
