A few suggestions slightly more off the beaten trail:

Gwalior
The comfortable Bhopal Shatabdi will get you there in 3.5 hrs arriving before 10am. That leaves plenty of time to check out the sights before heading back to the station at 7pm to arrive back in Delhi at around 10:30.

Mathura/Vrindavan
The same Bhopal Shatabadi gets you there in time for breakfast and a morning wander on the ghats. Spend the day seeing the sights and be back in Delhi in time for dinner.

Bharatpur/Deeg
If the birds are back (are they?) then Bharatpur is more than worth the trip. If you've had your fill of birds after a few hours you can either check out the nearby Fort & Museum in Bharatpur or head for Deeg (30km away). The trains to Bharatpur aren't really convenient for a day trip. Hiring a car is a better bet or take the bus.

I bet you understood was I was thinking. But this seems too much for a day trip in a car !! Especially when you have to enjoy the city as well. The train is a good option...

Interesting... may be I'll use the Gwalior option too. Sounds like a nice one day trip...
