Delhi arrival

Finding a position for the hands was important as we waited at the baggage reclaim belt. Not pressed on the trouser legs, as the sweat left handprints for all to see. Folded across the chest seemed to suggest pride-before-fall confidence. I settled on the "Prince Philip visits Korean computer factory" stance with hands clenched behind my back.

It was a long wait, and I'd reason to be worried, having had my rucsac sent to Athens on the last visit. An Indian man seated next to me spoke of having the airline lose his checked baggage twice before.

Then we were in the taxi zig-zagging towards Paharganj. Trucks with reflective decoration on the rear differential housings - I hadn't noticed that before. Into the Anoop at a respectable one in the morning, some snacks and drinks, and then a fitful sleep, with a cow bellowing outside my window, followed by the barking dog responding to each spate of bellows.

The air in Delhi is nasally cleaner than my visit two years ago. Yes, nasally - you still drag black bits out of your nose, but it has improved.

Yet again, I noticed the ambiguous pairings on signs: "Amul Pizza Rs. 20 Photostat" and the "All India Anti-Terrorist Group" sponsored by a basmati rice grower. There are beeps of mobile phones around Connaught Place, and many more soft-porn magazine sellers on Chelmsford Road.

But, hey, it IS better In Delhi than gloomy and rainy Europe. Things can only get better.

Hey, you made it! I'm one day away from Mumbai (in stinking hot Bangkok at the moment - just had a massage to get the muscles unknotted after a very long day yesterday). Where to from Delhi?

Archits, I wish I could get even but there's a couple of little problems called prior committments and cash flow!

It will be another year before I am able to set foot in India. In the meantime I get my fix from this web site.
