Delhi and ??? Jan 20 - Feb 12
Hi-
My name is Rodney, I'm from Fairbanks, AK and I'm going to Delhi on Jan 20 and all I know that I want to see is the Taj Mahal, other than that I will be going anywhere that looks fun and or interesting. I'm traveling light and I'm open to try anything. If anyone is interested or can give me some tips, that would be great! Take care and have a good one. I am also arriving on Jan 20. There is so much to see in India. Each time I go I try to stick to 1 State. this time it will be Madhya Pradesh but last year it was Rajasthan (3rd time). There is something for everyone in India!

Around Paharganj (= area, by Main Bazaar = street), right outside New Delhi Railway Station, you'll have backpackers coming out your nose
So try there ![]()

You mean like tourist offices? Yes, don't have any addresses though. Should be easy to find. I guess there's one in Nw. Delhi Station even but not sure if they handle more than trains. Or internet cafes etc.? Should abound I hear, in that area especially no doubt.
Or expound what you mean, I'm not sure if I get you. In kindness & all that, I mean thee no harm ![]() |

The Government of India tourist information office is on Janpath in Connaught Place - across the road from Indian Oil Building.

i agree. Paharganj is the place to stay. Any of the Hotels listed in LP will be fine for your first night - then you can choose another if you wish. I like Paharganj cos so convenient to Train station which has a special section for foreigners (upstairs - you can easily book your tickets here). Paharganj also has heaps of good eating places so you will be fine...

Thanks, everyone for your help, Paharganj will be my first stop. My flight gets in late in the evening, do hotels close late at night in this area? . I would imagine not because of lots of tourists??
I'm getting really excited now, my first trip and I still have a month to go! |

Hotels may close and you may find Main Bazaar pretty much deserted if it gets late. However like anywhere in the world hotels will be happy to accommodate you at any hour, so just knock or ring their bell, waking up the poor porter. If you're going "on the fly" without any bookings this will naturally decrease your chances of scouting around first (unless you're a heartless b*stard willing to wake up the whole place I guess
) Arriving after say midnight I think I'd like to have some booked hotel (and hope they didn't give the room away because somebody paid for it first). You can always settle for a place to crash then look on next morning, unencumbered by your luggage.Have you done something handy like look up or preferably buy a guidebook yet? Might be of use and worth the money. Anyway, have fun and enjoy. |

No worries, this is just the first place I've gone backpacking so lite so I just wanted a little more personal knowledge of the area I'm landing in. I've got my LP but, you know how it is...first hand is always better!
Thanks!! |

Hm yes. Many international flights (esp. US) seem to land in the middle of the night; mine (through eastern Europe) would be early morning I think, at least by the time you get out of the airport.
Again, if you're intrepid just ring some hotel's bell. (Keep in mind you'll be tired and everything will be new and unfamiliar to you & you'll have something of a neon sign on your head advertizing Newbie!!! Come harass me!!! no matter what you do; an empty dark Main Bazaar would not scare me now but just after my first arrival I don't think I'd have been very comfortable with it.) So calling up some place from your book and hope they keep your booking (should be OK) at least for your first night is really an idea. Hare Krishna is a long-favored backpacker's place, keeps getting OK reports here. Just opposite is Hare Rama, very similar. Bit of a walk down Main Bazaar, a little past the market halfway. Don't ask me, probably just 10-15 mins. from the station but will seem longer not knowing your way and carrying a pack. Pretty basic but OK; be prepared to haggle with the staff over every rupee but they don't mean it so bad. I guess they get too many guests who fall for it so what would you do. If it's still like that at all, like I say I hear mostly OK reports here. That whole street and its side-streets are full of similar places though, some cheaper, some higher-end. |
