Ooh, I can't wait! But will we be allowed to take all our air luggage on the metro? It would certainly defeat the purpose if you couldn't, but I don't like to think of bringing large luggage through the entries of the existing metro stations...

A few years ago (2007?) they restricted luggage on the Metro to one piece of maximum weight 10kg but then they relaxed the rule. I don't know what the current rules are. Anyway, the line to the airport is supposed to be something special, not the common or garden metro we have known until now.

That would be a brilliant idea if implemented. I remember the time when one could check in one's baggage for Gatwick Airport at Victoria Station.

I was in Delhi last week and will be there on Monday next week. Will try to find out the progress, my gut feeling is that the metro is way behind schedule just like every thing else for the Commonwealth Games. The infrastructure is pathetic and come the Games, India is going to be projected extremely poorly in the global media. There wil be comaprisons made with Beijing's infrastructure projects in readiness for the Olympics and the difference with Delhi is mind-boggling.

Cheers

Haven´t heard any news lately in either direction , but earlier they were ahead of the schedule. The Wikipedia article claims that phase 1 was completed three years ahead of schedule.

Metro will have five stations after the Airport connecting major bus depot, Connaugt Place and terminating at New Delhi railway station. Last I heard, they were on schedule for completion.

And yes, they had plans to allow airway luggage and also heard about the luggage check in.

Well your gut feeling is wrong and your prophecy that infrastructure in Delhi is pathetic and India will come off poorly during the Games is shocking ignorance for someone who claims to have visited Delhi last week.

Sporting Infrastructure:
------------------------
14 of the 17 Venues are completed and International Test events have already been held in 10 events. 2 more are being held next week. Only 3 pending venues are getting finishing touches and will be ready by June end -

JN Statdium - Buiding/Membrane Roof complete. Bucket seats - 72,000 already installed , Track laying underway.

SP Mukherjees Swimming Stadium / Wrestling Building in JN Complex - Buildings Complete. Finishing work inside the stadiums underway. End June inauguration.

Games Village - Complete incl a 200 metre Practice track/Indoor stadium / Artificial Lake( with water). Only landscaping of the common areas in Practice Arena underway.

City Infrastructure :
--------------------
Delhi T3 Airport Terminal - Ready for inauguration on July 3. It will be the second largest terminal in the world after Beijing.

Metro - For your kind information Delhi metro has never missed a deadline in the last 10 years and if you moved around the city ,you would never have made the preposterous comment that metro is behind schedule. New Metro lines to Noida / Anand Vihar/ Mundka are already up and running. Gurgaon to Qutub Minar line is being inaugurated next week . Qutub Minar to Central Sect underground is undergoing trial runs and will open in first week of July. Airport Express is 95% complete (and yes NEW DELHI RAILWAY STATION and SHIVAJI STADIUM STATION will have Baggage check and you can get your boarding passes there itself)and is scheduled to open in Sept (Trials start next month). The Central Sect- Badarpur line is also 90% ready and will open as originally scheduled - Sept 2010.

Flyovers - 20 of the 25 Flyovers/Interchanges are already up and running. Only 5 - Games Village , UP LINK (2) , Badarpur Border and Barapullah Elevated Corridor are pending and are 80-90% complete and will be up and running by June end/July latest.

Railways - New Terminals in Ajmeri Gate and Anand Vihar is already running.

Roadways - Most of the Bus Shelters in Delhi are now Stainless Steel Beauties. 60% of all buses are now Modern Low Floor ones.ISBT renovation is a bit behind schedule and will extend on to August.
Road beautificaton and landscaping is under advanced completion and all trees/shrubs/greenery will be planted June end before the monsoons.

Renovation Projects - 4 Major projects - Connaught Place , PaharGanj , Karol Bagh and Nizamuddin are on.

1) Connaught Place - 95% of Plastering of Inner Circle Complete, Parking Bays 4 of the 6 Blocks in Inner Circle Complete.Flooring and Finishing touches of Footpaths is just starting. Inner Circle will be ready by June End . Outer Circle by July End. Middle Circle ducting and Subways will be completed by August.

2) Paharganj - Already 90% of the Buildings have been partially demolished to remove encroachments. Undergrounding Ducting, Sandstone pavements and Concretising of Roads underway. The Market opp Paharganj Railway station (Amrit kaur) is already renovated with all shops cladded ,overhead wires underground, red sandstone kerbs etc

3)/4) Karol Bagh / Nizamuddin(in collaboration with Aga Khan Trust) - Underground Ducting and Sandstone Kerbs works are in advanced stage.

On your next visit to Delhi,Request you to keep your eyes and mind open. We,delhites have been in the midst of unprecidented contruction and hardships with diversions and dug up roads for the past 2-3 years and are finally seeing Delhi emerging into a new gleaming megapolis. Please don't spread negativity.

Why do you conjecture when you don't have proper info ? It's silly to say that it will take a year more to complete when trials are starting next month and 97% of physical infrastucture is complete !! Obviously you don't read newspapers or see TV. It is supposed to officially open in Sept but my hunch is that they may start it earlier once the spanking Delhi T3 Airport terminal is running normally in July.

I gather that Mumbai Monorail and Metro will be up and running early next year. Also, the new international Airport Terminal. I also heard that work is starting on the Worli-Haji Ali Bridge. And just a couple of days back there was news of the 117 storey WORLD ONE in Lower Parel by Lodhas !! I think Mumbaites should be proud of all the works happening in their city as well and defend their city as I did for Delhi against the constant Doomsday predictors.
