Delhi Accomodations- Hotel 55?

Hi,
I have to go to Delhi for work and I've been given a daily allowance of about Rs 1900 per night for accomodations. My cheapskate boss has hinted that he would GREATLY appreciate it if I could find something for even less. Before I go off and try to rent a plot of sidewalk for myself, I found a few places that seem to be within budget. Anyone have any opinions on Hotel 55 or YMCA/YWCA? I'm also bringing someone that I'd like to share a bed with (NOT my boss!) but I've heard that the Y's don't have double beds. Is this true? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated as well.

Hi Daal face,

I stayed at both Hotel 55 and YMCA when in Delhi in late 2003. The YMCA was better value ie larger, better lit rooms and a fine dining room, but a huge bleak place compared with Hotel 55 which was cramped tho cheerful. I would hate to stay at either place for more than three nights.

I liked Hotel 55 a lot. It was close to shopping and restaurants, not too shabby a neighborhood, staff was friendly and the decor was seventies-style, which made me laugh. It was also nicely air-conditioned. I'd stayed at another hotel my first two nights in Delhi, and the 55 gave me my first full night's sleep.

dude -

ive done a lot of travel -business and pleasure. weigh what i am going to say carefully - i dont want to create bad blood for you and work.

ive traveled and stayed in the best/biggest cities in us, asia and remote parts of asia on business. iv enever been rewarded for staying/living cheap. its never been a + come raise time and some of my really crappier bosses have hinted that im sort of lowering the bar for them (hey, if monk can stay in a gh - why do you need a 5*??).

the bosses always despised i mixed with locals, spoke the languages, ate the food - all that only hurt my career. better twas i to hang out and swill beer and go to titty bars.

all im saying is before you get all hot and sweaty and maybe HUGE hassles and complications - for what? to save 500 rupees? honestly, the accountant wont give two winks to a room in a foreign county setting the company back 50 bucks or more importantly question why you spent 2000 rupes instead of 1500.

big asian cities (capitals in aprticular) sort of offer poor value compared to the rest of the country -much better than western counterparts, imo

my two rupees -

hotel 55

Hi Daal Face

I have also booked Hotel 55 for the beginning of October and they have been nothing but helpful. Mohan answered any questions that i had promptly and was more than happy to take delivery of my train tickets for me. He even emailed me when they arrived to let me know that he had them.

So far so good. If nothing else, their staff seem friendly and reliable.

Please let us know what your experiences staying there are like.

Good luck with your trip!!

I can vouch for that, having stayed there last year in July. Mr. Mohan Joshi the manager( I presume he's the same person who you refer to as "Mohan" above) is indeed reliable and helpful.

Old thread, but does anybody know if Hotel Fifty Five requires a deposit?

On their web pages, under "Booking over the Telephone", they write "If reservation is available, we will send you a Confirmation Number and you must confirm your reservation with a ------% deposit of the amount agreed upon." The web pages appear to be partly under construction, much ------ on the "Reservation booking" page!

EDIT: Yes, Hotel Fifty Five requires a deposit! (Emailed the hotel.)
