So they are still selling those hideous whips! I thought that was the most bizarre 'souvenir' one would want when I went there in '99. Thanks for news re road - it sounds fine to me if you are hiring a car, Bris-Vegas. Let us know what you do, and how it all went. It's good to have feedback on the thread.

Mridula - keep up the writing and enjoy your next journey!

Prior to this Shatabdi trip we took my Maruti 800 to Agra. I did the driving for the part of the way. On that one way highway when I was driving at 90kmph (that is witin the speed limit) suddenly a Mahindra Scorpio was coming on my road in a one way highway from the opposite side. There was some problem with the road and they had diverted the traffic from the opposite direction into the 'wrong' lane. I rarely curse but I did quite vocally that time.

I have to say that as a highway engineer who is used to working to the constraints of Chapter 8*, the way that highway maintenance is handled in India, and the potential for resultant chaos and worse totally horrifies me. As for the things I've seen on construction sites, don't get me started, I've closed down sites for far less back home! *shudder*

*Chapter 8 of the UK Traffic Signs Manual, a HUGE set of regulations covering every aspect of safety at roadworks. Put it this way, insomnia is never a problem in my house..!

Haylo, I agree. Just yesterday I clicked a picture of a construction site in Gurgaon because of the caption 'Hard Hat Area' and though it can not be seen in the picture there were so many people working there without any kind of hat. Construction sites seem really dangerous even to someone like me who has no ideas of the proper safety norms.

Hmm, I have gone completely off-topic now. Sorry about that.

There's a nearby construction site where only one person has a hard hat, and that's the big boss. He wears it all the time, though he never shows any signs of getting his hands dirty. It does not seem to have occured to him that his "badge of honour" might be better employed in protecting one of his workers...

(P.S. Sorry Bris-vegas for going so offtopic on your thread!)

As a true exception I find all the workers at the metro construction sites wearing helmets.

Though I have been to Taj several times before, but its my first visit after my marriage (so is a bit special).

I decided to hire a car for my one day trip from Delhi to Agra.

I will be leaving for Agra on 21st of Nov'08, will update this thread with my experience this time once I am back.

Best,
