Dad's 50 birthday, where to take him?

Hey

My dad's 50th birthday is coming up. I was thinking of taking him to a nice dinner, along with my sister. What restaurants do you suggest?

Regarding food, we are 'thaeth Punjabis' who love eating, and we also appreciate other international cuisines (no Japanese please, dad hates sushi, I love it!)

Budget is around Rs.10,000 for 3 people.

Any suggestions?

If you like Italian, you may go to Diva at GK-II, Cibo at CP or Baci at Sunder Nagar.

If you haven't been to Bukhara at Maurya, it's good for your kind of food...

How much will Diva cost for 3 people? I went to Bukhara last month. We go there usually approx twice a year....so probably not that...and anyways...I seriously think Bukhara isnt what it used to be. The service has become really bad, and the ambience is tense...not the chillout type anymore....waiters are ignorant...and Dum Puhkt is heading in the same direction...

Will Rs. 10,000/- be enough for 3 people in Diva with drinks and desserts? What about Azzarro?

It depends on what do you order ! Some wines themselves cost that much. Diva has online menu.

You should do OK with Rs. 10,000 if you stick to the less spendy Argentine or South African red wines. Their wine list isn't on the website just now, but they're pretty helpful if you explain in advance what you're working to spend.

My sister-in-law has had birthday parties there and usually arranges a set menu with limited course options for a fixed price. It helps avoid making financial decisions after you've already opened that second bottle of wine which, in my case at least, is generally not a great idea...

Thanks curtdfw and delhiwalla. Well I called Diva and it was closed yesterday coz of renovation. We had 2 choices, Threesixty (Oberoi) and La Piazza (Hyatt Regency) and finally decided on La Piazza. The food was good, not great, but the wine was excellent!

Thanks for your opinions everyone!

I'd say for 10k for 3 - try the following places -

Sevilla - Clardiges - Very nice place

Magique - Garden of 5 Senses.

Urban Pind

I just notice you settled for La Piazza - never been there BUT heard quite a bit about it - how much was the damage ?

We were 4, and it cost 16,000/- (way over my budget) but we had a full course nice meal. We started with Champagne and appetizers, then some more starters, we went on the main course (the Pepperoni is excellent, but I dont recommend the Ravioli here, too 'olive oily'). The main course I'd say is a 7/10. But now comes the best part, the desserts. Totally mind blowing!! They dont have much of a variety, but whatever they have is just unbelievable.

The ambiance is nice, I always liked Hyatt Regency since I was a kid, and La Piazza definitely was nice. The waiters were nice, not like Bukhara, the waiters here kept giving us descriptions and recommendations on various dishes.

Overall I'd rate the experience as 8/10. If we didnt go for the champagne, and apart from that, after the champagne got over, we all had a drink each, I think we could have easily kept the bill under Rs. 10k, even for 4 people.

OMG....Just realized I've actually given a mini review on the restaurant haha!

Thats a mini review right there good nevertheless

16 grand for a dinner is way above my budget !!

BUT then it was yr dad's 50th bday - so was a special occassion. Champagne there would have been a bomb and drinks always turn out to be an expensive affair.

I remember in our childhood and even now - whenever we used to go out the elders of the family always used to guzzle drinks at home and then head to the restaurants.

Now we as adults do the same ( or in the cars ! )

Will def try La Piazza on a special occassion.

Also have heard quite a bit about Orient Express - I have heard its a bomb on the pocket. Also CIBO.

Yes Rs.16k was way over...I agree, but yeah, it was a special occasion!

Orient Express IS a bomb, agreed. But anything in the Taj is...
But I gotta tell you, I think food quality and service in perspective, nothing beats the Taj, I swear I was down with food poisoning until next day when I had to dine at Orient Express for my uncles anniversary, after dinner, I was all good and set. I love the Taj and everything it has to offer.

I think Oberoi is little more balanced when it comes to pricing. Threesixty is pretty decent (actually really really good) compared to the prices that they offer. Bukhara, Dum Pukht etc etc feel exceptionally overpriced now, since their service and food quality both are on the down slide.

Regarding Cibo, never been there, cant comment. In Italian, I think Azzurro beats all, HANDS DOWN!

And Cheers to my 100th post!!!
