Cost of sari and salwar kameez in Delhi?

Does anyone know roughly how much it would cost for a basic/medium quality sari and salwar kameez in Delhi?

I've had a look through some of the old posts and can see that some people have a budget of 14,000 - 25,000rp for a sari!

Quite a few second hand sawars going cheaply on the internet and wondered if it would be better to get one before I went.

This range of Saris is used for bridal wear..

and medium range saree depends on lot of things...but you will get something good between Rs.300-1000. Same goes for Salwat Kameez as well...

Second Hand Salwaar?!! I would rather...ahem..than have one of those. 14-20k rs range is for a bridal wear. A decent salwaar-kameez can cost anything between Rs. 500-5000 depending on the store, fabric, design, embroidery and your bargaining prowess!!

saree :
cotton - 200 to 1500
synthetics(chiffon etc)- 200 to 3000
silk - 1000 to sky is the limit

salwar kammeez :
basic - 150(not recommended) to 600
non basic - very difficult to say but you will get good ones (ones you can wear for a wedding party)for 1500 to 2500 in the malls like shoppers stop.

What's wrong with a second hand one? Is that like having second hand underwear?!

My budget is around 1,000 to 1,500 so that sounds fine for each. Not needed for a wedding, but just general day wear.

Thanks for your help

Certainly no one thinks of getting second hand Salwar Suits here in India. For your budget you will find a no. of options almost every where in India, Right from Lucknow to Patiala.

Dont know whats wrong with second hand ....
only that in india only the very poor have to resort to buying second hand clothing. simple new clothes can be had for very less money.

Off course a lot of old clothes will be passed in the family between cousins etc but as it is within the family so no one thinks of it as old clothes.

Many years ago I found a woman in Mumgai who was selling her old sarees -- the ones she tired of. For about $20, I got 6 or 7 sarees (4 silk) and a couple of kurtas and a South Indian ladies' longhi. I've still got some of them.

Well avoid the tourist shops is my main advice! They can be super-expensive.

I bought a lovely blue and pink sari for Rs650 in a small local shop somewhere in the outskirts of Delhi. I can't tie it at all and require at least two helpers but that's not the point!

Thats a very good piece of advice...however I assume assume that you have some local help available and by your name you do not seem to white and hence a sitting duck !!

Oh, I'm white alright. White and substantial.
About as noticeable as it gets!

I just thankfully made some female acquaintances whilst in Delhi who didn't laugh too much at my appalling inability to wear clothes properly. I owe my dignity to them- well, them and some strategically placed safety pins!

Edited to add that I went to the ISKCON Ratha Yatra in my city a few weeks back and there were HUGE numbers of white girls in unbelievably badly-tied saris. In an odd way I felt simultaneously embarrassed for and by them, which is terrible I know. It shouldn't matter...but somehow it does!
