Intel... It is a 945 something or other*. I re-installed the drivers from the motherboard site (Gigabyte) but I didn't do the process of removal in safe mode and clean install... that is the next step.

Google Earth kills it. Maybe I might even do a system restore, or maybe even the last image I made a couple of weeks back. Last resort though. As the old saying goes, the only true test of a backup is restoring from it

O.k , your driver is in cd that came along with mother board.
Go to drivers folders in this cd ,a list of few drivers will appear, select driver matching to your display I.C. present on mother board. If you do not want to open your PC's Cpu and physically locate the I.c and read the name with help of magnifying glass, then try by hit and trail method by installing and removing all options one by one, stop when display is o.k for true colors.

Ex-IT manager here, the kind who did have a clue about the job --- but thanks anyway, because help is always welcome, and, with Windows stuff, often needed, so I may be back .

Just I find being a techie so boring these days: it has quite lost whatever appeal it once had!

I do wonder, though if the problem might not be with the files for the monitor (Samsung T220) because that throws up an error message occasionally.

Equally, I might just swap the memory sticks!

Updates are current. Was trying a recommended Anti-Virus (Clamwin) but don't like it. I may pay for full AVG, if it would be helpful.

You should try out the Avira Free Edition. I am using it for past three years now and its excellent. It has almost all the features that you would find in any paid Antivirus plus it is pretty light on system. For spywares you can try out Spybot Search and Destory, it is another great free software. To clean up your temp files etc you can try out CCleaner

.

I stick with Zone Alarm (paid) but there are two things I dislike about it.

1. it is increasingly demanding of system resources.

2. the fact that one has paid the subscription for updates does not stop them trying to sell the new, even more secure version --- like they are admitting the one I already bought is not that good!

One day I might go back to AVG. Like... one day I might even go back to not being bored by being a techie!

(to be honest, I always hated problem solving on Windows PCs)

I've had really bad luck downloading drivers off OEM sites, unpacking them & having them successfully overwrite existing corrupt files. The reinstallation process seems to work much better with the original disks that accompany the motherboard. Recently I bought a computer & a local auction & although it didn't have the original driver disks - I managed to source them quite easily on Ebay for about $8.00 plus ship.

Ditto -- I don't like it as much as I did a few years ago, but compared to the Norton that came on my wife's new laptop it still wins.

I was very happy when windows 95 arrived with graphical features, then windows 98 was also welcome for supporting all known drivers automatically, then 2000, mellenium were thrusted but these two failed, XP came as breezer but a dual boot was required along with windows 98 to run all kind of multimedia. Now things are stable wit XP alone they are thrusting vista and win 7. for a person using word processor windows 95 was enough, for internet users 98 was good enough.any how XP has all the good things of world, why every day a new operating system by microsoft.

Because that is how they make their money! I loathed windows until 2000, which I only hated, and XP, which I only dislike. Partly (sorry, techie talk) this was because TCP/IP networking was greatly improved in 2000. (for the non-techies: the internet is built on TCP/IP networking; Microsoft tried very hard to pretend it didn't really exist for a long time)

Anyway, I'm trundling along now, just been using Google Earth (which is the one app that I have seen improved from a driver update years back; usually I say, if it aint broke, don't fix it.

Peak... I don't have the CD for the OEM board. The way (in theory) to ensure a successful overwrite is to remove the existing drivers, in safe mode, then re-install.

I have also located the Intel-original drivers in case I need to try something else. And hey, despite hating being a techie, I might even change the motherboard ---- but I want to wait for USB3 to become established before I upgrade, so much later next year, maybe.
