Change of weather in Delhi

As lot of Delhiites would agree that Delhi's weather has cooled down over the years. We see cooler winters and less hotter summers year on year.

Initially I though that it had something to do with Global Warming, and that is the reason things are going awry. However today I read a report in HT, that actually gave the reason for change. TREES.

In 1999 Delhi had a Green Cover of around 90 sq.Km, however as of today it stands close to 300 sq.km. Thats means an increase of more than 3 times. As of now Delhi is 20% of its area under green, and that makes it one of the Greenest Metros in the world to live in.

Due to these greens, rains have increased every year since 1999, barring 2003. The average temperature in summers have been coming down on yearly basis, it was around 37'c 6 years ago and stands close to 32'c this year.

All all this when we have these huge infrastructure projects, Metro Rail, Flyover, underpasses, Commonwealth Village etc being built. The population growth doesn't seem to stop.

But Managing the kind of infrastructure that Delhi has been able to build in last decade, and still increase the green cover more than 3 times, then I assume its a remarkable job.

Yes it is an achievement. I regulalry travel to Delhi since 1993 and have to sadly agree that Delhi in the last 6-7 years has really done well on this front. I think the Politician of Mumbai instead of trying to build another Shivaji statue should learn from what has been achieved in Delhi

It is one of the greenest Metros in the World, and its there to see. 300 Sq. Km is substantial coverage but still far short of what can actually be achieved and should be....Delhi is growing at a tremendous pace and i just hope that the government keeps up this green belt developments as well so that we dont end up living in a concrete jungle 20 years down the line...

Keep the green in place and clean up the Yamuna...

Agreed.. the Yamuna in Delhi is an eye-sore , even worse than the Ganga at Kanpur. It is really sad state of affairs.

It would be so nice to have a clean river running through the city....who knows once done it could become a lovely spot for Sunday picnics...

Yes, 20 % of green cover in a city that holds around 15 million people is huge actually..!! But yes, the quality of life is going up here, and as I have said several times, the Difference can be felt. Its just that numbers have started to pour in now.

And I agree with Puchoo, I would love to see the day when Yamuna gets the status it deserves, gets cleaned up and maybe when I have Kids, I can take them for a Picnic on banks of Yamuna in a winter afternoon. (10 years, touche..)

The problem, other than the government, is that most Delhites , truly do not care about the Yamuna...ask them and they will ofcourse say yes and it should be cleaned...but in reality it does not affect them...

There is need for citizens of Delhi to be more aware of these problems. Govt can’t do these things alone although Delhi has done well compared to other metros. We need to support organizations such as Greenpeace in their fight against govt and making ppl aware of the consequences of deforestation/not recycling etc etc.

I dont necessarily care for some of the tactics they use but in General yes, support to such groups will go a long way...

Two days ago, there was a report in the Times of India that Kolkata had overtaken Delhi as the most polluted city in India.

The reasoning was specious and unsound, it counted number of people with lung problems or somesuch, but still.

Let me see if I can find it...

(after desperate search...).. it was more than two days ago.
