Chandni Chowk
How safe would it be for two middle aged women to walk around Chandi Chowk in Old Delhi? We've been told 'don't'..... Have done it previously in a cycle rickshaw but would like to explore on foot.

I have been there alone many times, going down side lanes to Kinari Bazaar for trims, loading two huge bags, then catching a tuk tuk back to my hotel. I felt perfectly safe. Be careful with your handbags, otherwise no problem.

I can't see why you shouldn't go there. It's a nice and interesting area, and I've never felt unsafe there, be it with company or alone.

No problems for me either, have been there alone and with other female friends and not had any problems. Well worth a visit too, lots of interesting things to see and bargains to score! (Nice paper shops and statue shops were the highlights for me)

,Don't go out alone ,don't look at anybody, don't talk to anybody ,only stay in the best hotels , and this advise trickles down and is taken heed of .There ultimate aim is to sell expensive excursions, and keep there clients safe .It's the same the world over !! |

Ah, yes--the economics of fear. There is a ton of money to be made from scared people (cf. The United States of America).

Walking is safer ....
The only time I took a rickshaw through CC Some little B__tard drilled me in the back of the head with an apple ... and I can still feel it to this day!
I find that place a bit of a circus but fairly safe as long as you follow standard safety protocol.

I did get touched up by 2 guys but I elbowed one and shoved the other so I did okay out of it. I was walking around though not in a rickshaw.
I enjoyed it though. There was a really good food shop that one of the locals recommended to me heading down towards the fort on the left. It was packed. I had the best samosa and a few other tidbits. Just go for it. |

Sometimes while in Delhi I have to go to Chandni Chowk every day for work and I stand out... being a blonde! I've walked everywhere around there from the busiest bazaars to little alleys where very few tourists ever go and I've never had a problem. You will be approached by many people trying to take you to a sari shop. You can go with them... I've found great places like that, but be prepared to pay more when there is a comission guy. Just bargain hard and have fun!

A walking tour of Chandni Chowk is highly recommended. Browse the shops selling all kinds of stuff, very colourful. Go to the adjoining Paratha Wali Gali & savour the mind boggling varieties pf parathas. Leave the achar alone. Near the paratha shops you will find sweet shops selling great Rabdi. Seek out the stall on the left pavement of Chandni Chowk selling fantastic Jalebis.
If you are shoping bargain hard. |

I'm sure it's okay. After seeing K3G several dozen times, I've dying to go there!

I loved walking around Chandni Chowk! It was my favorite area of Delhi and it never even crossed my mind to worry about safety.
