Can I get malarial tablets in Delhi ??

Hi, I have some malarial tablets from a previous trip to Thailand and my GP wants to prescrive me the same type again (but expensive private prescription)

Can I get malarial tablets in Delhi easily enough ? I just remember being able to get evreything over the counter in Thailand and was hoping Delhi would be the same to save me a lot of ££££££££

I would have enough to take the tabs 2 weeks before my trip but would need to find them within 2 days of getting to Delhi and before I start travelling around.

Thank you

The easy answer to that is Yes, you'll find Doxycycline and Larium in Delhi, both of which provide adequate protection against Malaria.

There is a bigger range of anti malarials, but these are better sourced through your own national health system!

I was able to get doxy from a pharmacy in Panjim so I am sure that you will be able to find some in Delhi. Apparently, however, there is a bit of a scam selling fakes. I don't know much about it so a reputable pharmacy would be the best bet. Anyone know one of these??

I have started taking my malaria tablets prescribed from my doctor in London. I am not in India yet and already have a bad stomach - is this expected and will it clear up before I reach India on Saturday?

Make sure of the special conditions for each type! If its doxy do not take it on an empty stomach. If its Lariam my prayers go with you..

If you are a Brit they probably gave you a 3rd route but look through the detailed info for that specific type..

I often had stomach problems after starting my malarials. I finally figured out that i could *not* eat them on an empty stomach. I found the best time was after dinner and before bed. That way if it was making me nauseaus again at least i'd be asleep.

What tablets do you need? If, like me, you were prescribed Paludrine and Chloroquine or Nivaquine, you should get them BEFORE YOU GO. The ones that you take weekly are easy enough to get in India, but the ones that you take daily are very difficult to find. I have done a lot of hunting around for them in India, and have NEVER found them on sale. Other people may have had better luck, but BE WARNED you might not be able to get them at all. Forget about saving money on such a vital topic as a LIFE-THREATENING disease !!

proguanilhydrochloride

I always start with the disclaimer; never give medical advice if you are not a qualified doctor

Still, as malaria may kill you we were advised to take 200 milligrams paludrine (proguanilhydrochloride) per person per day.For our kids (5 and 3) it is 75 and 50 milligrams each day. Unless you travel to the Northeast, proguanilhydrochloride will do the trick. It can be bought in Delhi (and other big cities in India and Nepal)

The information comes from the company that does preventive health for the Netherlands department of foreign affairs. They base their advise on WHO advice. For more medical travel advice: check www.who.int/ith/en

for information on malaria check: http://whqlibdoc.who.int/publication...0364_chap7.pdf

Have fun,

Hans (of to Chennai in 2 days time )
