Buying dvd's in Delhi

Does anyone know of a good place in Delhi where you can buy dvd's (no vcd) of western series like Prison Break, House, the Soprano's etc? Or western movies?

No suggestions about bollywood stuff

please, I'm allergic to it

And yes, I know you can download everything but that's not what I want to do.

I'm running a bit low on stock right now and haven't yet managed to find a place that has a wide choice, just the hit-and-miss outfits at palika bazaar, defence colony and sarojini nagar. So any suggestions are VERY welcome!

Shop no.34 in Palika Bazar... you will find all sorts of western films including classics by Fellini, De Sica etc. in case you dig them.

Thanks for the tip but I went to shop 34 at Palika and they didn't have any interesting movies, would have loved to get some Fellini etc but it just wasn't there.

All the other places either had no western titles or were only interested in volume sales (from 10 copies on) of pirated dvd's which they don't even stock themselves but have to get from some sort of warehouse behind Chandni Chowk.

The one thing you can get effortlessly at Palika appears to be porn, don't know if it was just me or those guys' bread and butter business but I got approached at least 7 times. 'Hot nights with Chetna' seems to be a hit these days, perhaps she should get A/C installed.

Oh well, back to the drawing board. I guess I'll have to sit it out until I fly home for a couple of weeks R&R and stock up there.

About Palika Bazaar and porn: Nope, this isn´t just you...Everytime I went there I got approached by these guys...

I don´t know where you stay in Dehli so my suggestion is maybe not suitable to you. There is a good shop in Munirka Vihar Market which rents dvds of western movies. There was quiet a wide range available. If you dont want to rent but to buy I guess you could ask the owner where from he gets his stuff.

You can try Landmark, they have a huge dvd collection and you're likely to find what you're looking for.

They have prison break for instance, all seasons. Prices might be a little on the higher side but great collection. I think you can order online as well but you'd be better off visiting them.

Trouble is, the only landmark tht I know of in Delhi NCR is in Gurgaon

Thanks guys, i'll check out both suggestions! Every now and then my wife and me go to Gurgaon for shopping (I'm in Jor bagh btw), next time she can just park me at Landmark's while she does her thing

DLF Grand Mall is almost the last mall on the road towards your right if you enter the road from NH8 that is.

Landmark is in the basement but you'll see a huge advert board reading Landmark right outside the mall.

I finally went to the Landmark store and to complete the thread, I'll provide some feedback.

They had a number of english-language movies but very few series. As was noted by OrangeStreet, the third season of 'Prison break' was there and I also saw '24'.

Unfortunately no others were on offer. Also, what was on offer was significantly more expensive than in Europe.

Bottom line: I did my shopping on Amazon, had the titles shipped to a friend in Europe and when I get back there in a month for my holiday I'll just bring 12 months worth of series back to Delhi.

While living in Delhi I bought many DVDs from Amazon UK and got good service, typically about one week shipping time. Also used some Asian suppliers like DDDhouse and Sensasian.

Usually, though, I just had them accumulate back home in the US and brought them back from holidays there. And any friends and co-workers that came over brought small batches as well...

I'd like to give amazon a try but have the feeling that getting the goods delivered to my door here in Delhi might be a pain (customs, post office,....). Feels like there's many occasions for things to go wrong and usually they do....the prospect of having to make 20 phonecalls and filling in forms + paying an unknown customs fee turns me off. But i'll give it a shot sometime and report back.

Take care in Dallas, loved the Nasher museum and touring around the state parks when I worked there! Getting to the point where I'd kill for a good BBQ at 'the county line' in Austin.

Didn't ever have to deal with customs on the DVDs from Amazon et al. I had them delivered to my office address -- don't know if that made a difference. Also I bought them 1-2 at a time; no big orders.

Dallas is good so far in the year I've been here, but would rather be back in Oregon -- the microbrew environment is rather underdeveloped here.

While on holiday I bought for about 300 EUR worth of series but already I'm getting anxious looking at the consumption rate (never even had a tv before coming to Delhi, now there's nothing else to do but go out eating, inviting someone for a drink, reading or watching dvd's). Airtel's tv offers aren't exactly what I was waiting for certainly not with commercials for crappy products like skin bleaching stuff thrown in every 8 minutes even on HBO.

Anyway, I ordered a small dvd box from amazon uk today as a try-out, delivery should be between 8-12 business days. Worst case scenario is that I threw away 23 euro. I'll live.

Just wanted to add to this--I walked past some music/DVD store in Defence Colony yesterday that had a bunch of TV series on DVD (Friends and Sopranos were the ones I noticed) for sale.

You're right Lindsay, it's a little shop selling all kinds of electronics and dvd's..but they didn't have my favourites (I hate 'friends' and own the Soprano series). There's also a couple of small shops with very limited collections (Lost and '24') in Select City walk, Saket and the DLF mall that opened just next to it. Problem is they don't have much (I guess 'Blackadder' won't ever make it here) and prices are ridiculous at 3000 Rs for a box.
