I agree -but its the sociology of the instrument and its culture that almost preclude its continued existence even today in North India (or South for that matter). To a large extent the sarangi's success was the product of the gharana system of heriditary learning mostly within the Muslim musical culture. Now that that system has faded away along with the demise of the court patronage system it is not generally an acceptable occupation for a middle class hindu . . . blah, blah, blah

what's you ref to V G Jog (C.V.Jog)?

I was in Yokohama until the day I wrote that message. I am now in Amsterdam and loving it!
I used to be an IT guy in Japan and so am I in Holland as well.

Good luck with your Sitar buying .. many other folks have given a lot of useful info here for you.

re sarangi player in A Suitable Boy. Never did make it throught that book but had an *interesting* hour with Vikram Seth in his hotel here in toronto a couple of years back - He was reading from ASB and he had torn his copy into about 4 sections so it wasn't so huge to carry around. He is a great lover of Hindustani music and a follower of my all time fave vocalist Ustad Amir Khan - after whom he apparently modeled a musician in the book.

V G Jog - hindustani violin player recently passed away. Really sweet old guy and he accompanied all the greats.
we used to call him affectoionately "the jockey" as he always wore the most vibrantly coloured silk kurtas

tons more info on my site at www.pathcom.com/~ericp

He sits outside in a backstreet and it seems like this is a 24 hour a day job, as he is always there. He doesn't sell them with a case at all - you would have to buy that separately(this might also be the same for shop purchase anywhere - i.e. when you buy a guitar in Ireland it doesn't come with a case - guess that's pretty run-of-the-mill-everywhere?). The sound from the finished article is amazing and beautiful - the Sitar's he makes are works of art!. The prices he charges are about the $30 mark (and I believe the price was upped because of who was asking )- but what a price for the magnificent finished article! I was just thinking that even if someone lets you know of a Store where you might buy one, it might be worthwhile asking if there is perhaps a local person who might be "manufacturing" them. I've often thought about buying one as I've played guitar for 35 years, but never quite got around to it

Are you sure it is a Sitar and not a veena. Coz Sitar isn't used much in South let alone a core small southern town like Dharmapuri. Sitar is seldom used in carnatic music if ever. If it is a Sitar he is making in Dharmapuri, then that its very interesting and rather terrific for music.

Thanks, Eric (Sahib).
You're right, I'll have to be extremely careful about shipping it and it may not be worth the cost and trouble of finding or making a special case or crate for it. I might be better off just buying one here in Tokyo. I'll still look around in Delhi though. Who knows what I may run across.

Probably would be... that is the sort of thing that is affordable in India due to low labour cost.

I've just had a look on e-bay and there's one sitar listed for AU$450.

I'm starting to think about what logistics and costs in getting on made & sent home.

Cheers

Quality and price will vary widely , and without experience to tell you could easily get something not so good.

But hey, if anyone is prepared to buy such a thing on e-bay, then I guess it isn't going to matter so much to them!
