Well, actually, yes, I do judge the whole lot of them based on those we stayed at in our first trip. I think that neighborhood represents the worst of Delhi for tourists. In Sam Miller's book, Adventures in a Megacity, it was here where a tourist was having such a harried time that she meant to only indicate her distaste by mimicking spiting, but she actually spit on him. And then she cried and cried. I understand. It was the Paharganj that nearly crushed the joy of India out of me too.

Two of our friends went to India and they stayed in Paharganj despite our warning, and now the wife refuses to discuss it at all.

There probably are good hotels here and there, and I'm sure many of you can attest to that, but I will never take my chance when there are other areas and options available.

You are right. The point i was driving at was that a new sector has come up. Because of the common wealth games next year; govt is trying to create more stay options. They are therefore promoting bed and breakfast scheme as the hotels rooms are insufficient. These b&bs or homestays are the run by people like you and me. They get employment and we get homely food and company. Besides you can stay anywhere you want as they are spread across city. There are ex-army guys running them, govt officers and many others. The places are clean as they dont keep their homes dirty. You get to know flavour of local issues; i have seen many of them and I find them better.....I have stayed at B&Bs at London as well and they were good and great value for money.. i have also stayed in a homestay at a place called barot in HP paying only Rs 400/- for a room and that place was simple but location was awesome..now there is no hotel over there and this place is started by one Gorkha rifles soldier; which i find an interesting way of tourism development...

I chose to stay there 4 times after my first time in my first trip to India, and stayed there again in my next two trips (which makes all my visits to Delhi by now)

Has anyone stayed at Asian Guest house, Scindia House, Connaught Place? At INR 600, their rooms in the heart of Delhi seem to be a good option. Haven't seen any reviews.

Dear Indizen, I'll say avoid. rickety lift, uninspiring rooms, smelly toilets, narrow galleries...

IMO, Avoidable.....

IMO, Only YMCA Hostel will give you a room for Rs. 900 (single Occupancy). Bathrooms are common but well maintained ! Else you have a small lodge behind Regal Cinema (can't recall the name) and two famous guest houses Sunny & Ringo behind The Scindia house (the same building which house Asian)

I am looking for a double bed room in Dec wk1 for about 3 days. I will have my wife and my <2 yr kid. So, I'm looking for a hotel with room service, own kitchen, basic but clean place.

I guess we may need room heaters during that time?

What budget should I be looking at (per day)? I don't want to splurge on rooms, would be happy to get between 800-1200.

Any specific recommendations keeping in mind that I will have my wife+kid?

Many thanks...

I don't think you will need heaters - have some warm clothes, and the bedding at this time will be sufficient. Read back through the thread for some ideas, and I think Ginger Hotel at 999 rupees a day is not a bad choice. You don't have room service there though - you have to go to the restaurant and bring up what you want, or else eat in the restaurant. It's a nice clean restaurant with good seating. There are 2 lifts, so none of this is difficult.

Ringo's was closed in December for (badly-needed) renovations and I stayed at Sunny's; I didn't like it as well as I've always liked Ringo's and I actually moved to Paharganj, an area I really dislike. (I found a nice place there, but still dislike the neighborhood.)

Thanks for the update .....

Indizen, if you are ready to leave the CP area, then as Aishah said, Ginger is the best choice....

Thanks Aishah!

Yeah, I've read your review and Ginger's my backup plan, yes .

I'm a bit confused though (see bold text in the quote) - are you saying that Ginger's bedding in early-Dec should be good enough and we would not need heaters?

BTW, do you suggest that we should reserve the room beforehand if we choose Ginger?
