Likir House in Lajpat Nagar 2 is not that far by taxi from the airport - and has nice home cooking for dinner, plus a decent breakfast. Rooms are very clean and comfortable. You will need to book well ahead however as it is very popular. There is a nice market nearby. And the room rate for a double is probably around 1500 rupees - I haven't stayed there for a few years, and it used to be about 1200.

Do a google within the Forum for contact details - it has been mentioned a few times here.

I'm about to stay at Ginger Hotel in a few days - will report back how it is. This is 999r. for a standard double room with air conditioning.

Aishah thanks so much for your reply. I can't find Likr House online - they don't seem to have a website. Do you have a phone number for them? I'd like to talk to them and to reserve rooms. Thanks again. I'd also like to know how Ginger Hotel is - are the bathrooms attached or shared?

I thought Ginger Hotel very convenient. My room was spotless and had everything you could need - TV, desk for computer, well appointed and exceptionally clean bathroom. Bedlinen very fresh and clean.

The one drawback was the restaurant - it just passes muster. There is a good menu but many items on it are unavailable. I had for breakfast a reasonable coffee, but terrible stale bread barely toasted, no butter and a blob of red jam in the middle like a sandwich. This was butter, jam, toast. Don't order that one!! There is no food room service - you have to go to the restaurant.

However, for a room on a short term stay I would recommend this hotel.

I think I gave you that information in your last post. It's hotel Maharaja, near V3S Mall.

Don't do budget hotels in Delhi. You can go budget elsewhere but this city is too large and has many bad hotels. Budget hotels in other cities are much better and cleaner. Staying in the Paharganj was the worst experience ever of India. The first trip was tough enough without having to add to it going back to a moldy, mildewy, roachy hotel with gang-like rickshaw drivers hanging out in front.

You should look into homestays. Our host has been making arrangements for us to meet with people and see things we normally wouldn't be able to see. Homestays are not exactly budget but you get personal care and attention. I think it is worth it.

You should budget now in order to not stay in Delhi's budget hotels.

And now I ask any readers: Would anyone who is returning to India chose to stay in Paharganj a second time?

I do not know how many hundreds or even thousands of hotels there are in Paharganj, and you happened to choose a few filthy ones, and now you defame the whole lot of them. I have stayed in the U.S. in places like Motel 6: Now would I do justice if I assumed that all the other places are like them?

You get what you pay for. And in Paharganj you do get a very good value for your money, if you choose wisely, patiently and with some good guidance. If you had said the same thing about Sudder Street in Kolkata, I would easily agree. But not with Paharganj as a whole.

I have to agree with atala - there are some good hotels in the Paharganj area. And for 999rupees, I think Ginger Hotel, near New Delhi station is also a good one, not at all 'scundgy'. It is not necessary to pay more than a 1000 rupees for a decent, clean place to stay. Most homestays are higher than this.

Yes you are right there are good and bad everywhere .. its just the question of probability and individual choice. Pahargunj has so many of them as it is closer to railway station and one needs to find good ones..........
