Two budget hotels in Old Delhi

Here are two hotels listed in Rough Guide India book for budget hotels in Old Delhi. Anyone familiar with them?

Amber 6477 Katra Bariyan 011/2396 5081. This newish, tourist-friendly hotel behind Fatehpuri Mosque is one of the area's better offerings, although hot water comes in buckets rather than out of the shower, and the windows all face an internal courtyard. Rs300-500

New City Palace 725 Jama Masjid Motor Market 011/2327 9548. Though it doesn't quite live up to its billing of "a home for palatial comfort", this budget hotel is clean and well situated, directly behind the Jama Masjid (though you'll need to boook ahead for a room with a view). Showers are hot and the best rooms have a/c, though not all the cheaper ones have outside windows. Rs300-500

We're semi-familiar with the suroundings for both of these, but has anyone had experience?

Oh, and just for comparison, Hotel Broadway, which we love so much, costs about Rs1500 to 2000 a night.

i think broadway could be a bit more now, i was there for a dinner at chor bizzare restaurant and had a peek into the prices. what i memorized seem to be a little more than that, but than you should now it's a lovely hotel.

i am also curious about a decent old delhi accomodation. not sure though about the places around jama masjid, all of these i've seen (such as hotel jamia or taj ) looked as shabby as could be, obviously aiming for pilgrims who would sleep even on a stone bed. i mean it would be great to find something decent in a range of 1000 rp, something in a vein of hotel benazeer in mumbai, very basic but super clean and tidy. it's such a great area, i could spend weeks just being lost in old delhi....

anubisgrau, we sort of thought those cheap hotels would not be very clean. Their prices were just a bit too low.

We still haven't heard back from Broadway yet so we're thinking of getting reservation through some travel website we saw. Last year we booked directly through the hotel... they replied within a week, but now it's been a month. Man, we really want to stay there. But if anyone has any other Old Delhi suggestions of the kind anubisgrau suggests, please let me know.

Or possibly I could learn another skill... Making a long distance call to India. I could call the hotel. I mean, I'm usually up and about by 4 AM anyway.

rhyll1 if you check the date, desertlover posted in 2005. The thread since has been revived and other suggestions are here if you read it. If you have a suggestion for a clean budget place you have stayed in, in Delhi, on your recent trip, please add it.

My recommendation based on a couple of stays is the YMCA on Jai Singh Road.

Decency, if nothing else, is a YMCA forte. On Sundays you are likely to hear hymns being sung during Christian services.

Room cleanliness as with most cheaper accomodation in Delhi is below five star standard but the public areas including the good dining room(I refer to the space and furniture) are clean.

I guess rooms without a/c will DO(?) have a fan on the ceiling, my experience is it works pretty well and feels relatively cool. what is the price range of rooms with ceiling fans and own bathroom? Paharanganj/Connaught Place.. is reservation a must in Delhi? for what I'm looking for or can I just show up (arriving early morning at 6)

ps. what's the weather now in Delhi? humid and sticky?

If you're arriving at 6am, you may be fine at the lower-cost hotels, as people will be checking out in the morning.

In CP, I like Ringo's on Janpath, just behind the Air India office (Scindia House). You can get a small room with a fan, the shared toilets and showers are nearby. Price is probably Rs250-300. The hotel is clean, people are very nice, and you can get simple meals (or they will send out for something for you) and there's a laundry service.
