If you want rid off the rush of paharganj, you may come to find few good hotels and guesthouses in Karol Bagh and Anand Parbat area ,which are only at a distance of 3 kms from NDLS.

Paharganj is the filthiest, grottiest and smelliest corner of Delhi. While the paranoid western backpacker crowd prefer it mostly as a place to network, meet similar people, save money , a quick transit stop and of course proximity to the Railway station , however middle class Indian tourists will get a heart attack there ( double heart attack since you are from kerala ). Please spare your family the ordeal. The only self respecting Indians who stay there are the travelling salesmen who drop their stuff in the rooms , go on business during the day and take a return train.

If at all , you wish to stay close to the Railway station , stay in Karol Bagh. While it's still crowded and dirty , it is bang in the middle of Delhi's middle class shopping mecca. Or else , try the Ginger hotel at the Ajmeri Gate entrance of the station.
If you are still bent upon Paharganj , pick up a hotel on Arakshan Road which is slightly off the main bazaar , cleaner and quieter.

If you do have a phone, this is what I recommend :

Sunny guesthouse:

Connaught Place, New Delhi. 152, Scindia House

-Phone

+91113312909

-rates for rooms-

Dorm (comm)- Rs.90
Single (comm)- Rs. 125
Double (comm)- Rs.250
Double (att)- Rs. 350

-Amenities (hot shower, tv, etc)-

Hot shower available at all times. But in the summer you won't need it in Delhi
TV in the 'living room'
Fans inside the rooms do work
Open air reading/eating place with in-house cook

It is in Connaught Place where you'll find western resturants like Subway and can get some real coffee.

Anna - that guest house and also, Ringo Guest House, in nearby area, look absolutely revolting from the outside. Are the rooms clean, bedlinen spotless etc? They are also in a very noisy, grotty area of Connaught Place, not great for a family with young children I wouldn't think.

If you need to be near New Delhi Railway station, the Ginger hotel, looking at its website, seems to be the pick, but it's not really low budget.

Budget Hotel - N Delhi

Both Ringo and Sunny are more oriented towards the solo backpackers. If you are looking for a budget place than a good choice is Hotel Gold Regency in Paharganj main market.

However, if you can spare upto Rs. 1200/- per day than Hotel Ginger, situated within the New Delhi Railway Station premises is a great place. It's run by a Tata Group (of Taj Hotels fame) company.

when I was there in 2005 it was ok. not spotless, but she was asking for a low budget hostel. Actually I would only recommend the double room with private bathroom, the single room had spiders and the fan was loud. The owner is friendly and he can arrange trips or train tickets. When I was there he arranged a trip to Mcleod ganj for me and my friends. The ally where Sunny and Ringo are located is not very appealing, but only a 2 min. walk from a nice shopping area.

NDLS has retiring rooms and it's not difficult to get them, provided they are available. On platform No. 1 there is a booking booth.
