He just made contact with us. I'm so relieved! He seems to be okay -he feels unwell and has no money, but somebody he met gave him 50 rupees for food and a bed in a hostel. We're trying to work out how to get him some more help now.. will update again soon. Thank you everybody

That's a relief, and not least to you, I'm sure.
I'd try and get him to a) Take it easy and not stress himself out, and/but b) get over to his embassy asap, who should be able to assist. As you found out calling them already, they are probably overrun by citizens getting themselves into trouble (I'm not saying your brother did, but that may be how they see it. There are plenty finishing their money there then expecting a free ride home, which may explain their reluctance), so I guess some tact and perseverance won't hurt. Other than that and as already suggested, you could look into getting him some money, any missing documents and so on. Money transfers can be quick these days. Western Union or Thomas Cook are two names that first spring to my mind, there are others, your bank or post office or whatever should be able to inform you. Well, good luck again. Let us know how it goes.

If he is in trouble - he needs to go to the british high comm and not Amritsa. As disinterested as they might sound - they are there to help, plus chances are your taxes paid for them being there in the first place - so might as well take advantage of it. If they sounded disinterested - it may simply be due to the fact that they get a lot of distressed nationals turning up having been robbed, lost their belonging, etc (can't quite remember but in numbers in something like the tens of thousands every year). Do you have any details on exactly what he lost?
If he lost his passport - he definitely needs to get that replaced and the sooner the better. In some cases he may find it difficult to buy/book somethings if he doesn't have a passport as identification. Secondly - if he had a credit card or something like that - and he wants a replacement - then he's going to need a passport to do that! Thirdly - if he atleast registers with the High Comm then you'll know how to get in touch with him. Its the sensible thing to do. Do you have any other friends, family here in India/ Delhi that you can contact to assist your brother? |

He needs a passport to leave India, let alone get back into his home country. He must (if he is staying long enough) apply for a new one, or else get an emergency travel document (temporary passport) which is good for the flight back home.
This must also be endorsed with his visa details by the FRRO, probably with words like "Permission to remain in India until...". Without that he could be considered as not having a valid visa, and they might prevent him leaving. Foreigners' Regional Registration Office, Delhi: East Block-VIII, Level-II, Sector-1, R.K. Puram, New Delhi-110066 Travel tickets? Oh... and why not let him have a link to this thread in you next mail: he can register on the site, let us know what's happening, and someone here will always try to answer any questions or give advice.

He must lodge a FIR at the police station near the place where he was robbed.

Amazingly the people who robbed him went through his stuff and took everything except his pasport -even though it was in plain slight. I guess they must be the nice variety of druggers and robbers. We have a friend of a friend on the way to pick him up now who will take him to the High Commission to make sure everything else gets sorted out.

Good. Or... as good as it can be in the circumstances...
Do tell him he's welcome as a member anyway! He might like the site, if his experiences haven't made him feel like catching the next plane home. Wouldn't blame him if he did feel that way. |

It needs to be underlined that he requires a FIR, as jyotirmoy says. It is official proof that a calamity happened to him. In case any valuables were lost that are insured, he needs the doc too. It is also a required proof for his High Commission.
