Broadband in Delhi?
Hey guys, first time posting. I'll be heading to Delhi for an extended period of time, and I am curious about the availability of DSL/broadband internet. How affordable is it to have DSL in home, and how easy is it to have it installed?
Thanks! |

Hi
Hi,
Broadband is a good option .... 2000INR for installation and 440INR a month ... choose between Airtel, VSNL, Tata indicom .... MTNL is good but if fails once then its a 5 day customer care call ..... Airtel is great .... Welcome aboard ... Cheers, Dhananjay |

I'm not sure if the guys above are talking about existing broadband connections or perhaps the new DSL connections that are to be introduced in the coming months in 198 cities across India!
The old broadband connections in India are fine I've used them myself but don't expect huge download/upload speeds, the broadband connections on offer are often criticised in Chip (India) as being rather slow compared with elsewhere. Of course this is the opinion of a bunch of geeks like myself! I think it fair to say for basic e-mail,web upload, newsgroups and the like the speeds may manage but you won't be downloading the latest DVD from Kazaa! That will come with the new DSL connections! |

You might want to clarify the definition of "broadband".
I've noticed that in India, it isn't anywhere close to being as "broad" as what we have in the US. 128K may be considered "broad band" in India. (I have a 5MB ie.5,000Kb connection at home here) Plus, due to net congestion there is no guarantee that it will be any faster than dial up. However, if you spend extended amounts of time on the internet, it might actually be cheaper than dial up. Thats because you are charged by the minute by the telephone company for local calls. Boadband is usually a fixed fee. |

cable internet
I've got Hathaway cable internet..... very simple stuff... laid a cable from the the TV cable wires in the back alley to my apt (Rs 1000), rent me a modem (Rs128/month... you can also buy one) and I get unlimited uploads, downloads for Rs900/month at 128mbps.....
they've got other options too...256mbps and 60 months or yearly contracts.... the connnection is excellent and even at the slower speeds I can do everything want... I work from home so it's perfect! google Hathaway.... cheers, lady with a bicycle |

I got 512 kbps Airtel Boradbad, well at least its 256 kbps for real
![]() Am quite happy with the service, and customer service n trouble shooting n all. Its not too expesnive either, modem rental is about 150 per month + plus a one time security deposit of Rs 500, which is refundebale on returning the modem! Rohan

broadband
We've got Airtel and have been pretty happy with it, though our connection is only 128k. But it is reliable with unlimited use. Fairly cheap too, by US standards. I've heard STAR can be pretty unreliable, but that's second hand.

Has anyone tried using a VOIP service with their Broadband router? My brother wants to send me a Broadvoice box so he can call us for free. I am not sure if something like this would work.

Yes. I use Skype in Chennai over BSNL's DataOne service.
