for Urdu dictionairies and books try the little cluster of urdu bookshops right by the Jama Masjid. Daryaganj also has some amazing bookshops if you need more scholarly books.
I'm also very keen on the two bookshops in Basant Lok near Priya cinema - Om Books and Fact and Fiction.

There also used to be a big book fair at Pragadi Medan. It was at least once a year (in January?) and might be more than once a year. Lots of technical books for sale at that event.

Can anyone recommend a bookshop for academic (mostly political science) books? Is there something like a University Book Shop? Or can i walk in nearly every bookshop and ask the guys there to order special books?

Janta Book Depot used to be primarily for book for school/college kids. It's worth a shot... th outlets im aware of are Bengali market and Lajpat Nagar, but there would be more as well for sure.

Books in Bulk
For the record I'd like to mention that Nai Sarak, a road off Chandni Chowk opposite the Town Hall is the major market for books in Delhi. A must visit area if you require stacks of books.
Great discounts are on offer: esp on academic books. For Medicine and Science, the ultimate destination is Delhi Book Store on Ansari Road in Daryaganj (Delhi Gate). Metro Station = Chandni Chowk. For second hand books, esp fiction, visit the pavements of Daryaganj outside Golcha cinema on a Sunday morning. |

After shopping the half afternoon i can recommend the bookshop in Ansal Plaza (really small but many new books) and Anjali Book Bazar in II-J-10, Central Market, Lajpat Nagar (many used books and a large variety like fiction, non fiction, children books, dictionaries,...)
