Talking Bodybuilding in Delhi?

I'm coming to Delhi in early November '07 for 3 months and am interested in keeping up my bodybuilding training and in making some useful contacts. Any leads?

BTW, that's me in the pic.

If you will be staying near to New Delhi station/Main Bazaar I know of a gym nearby.

Cool

Where am I staying? Well, that's the 34 million rupee question! I'm not actually doing anything official in Delhi until January, when I will be presenting a paper at a conference and will be accommodated at Jawarharlal Nehru University. So I've got a few weeks before then during which I can stay anywhere I like while I acclimatize. Since I train at least once a day, the near proximity of a decent gym could influence my choice of hotel. So any advice on hotel/gym combinations would be welcome! Or feel free to just say hello and talk about bodybuilding, health and fitness etc.

By the way, although this is my first visit to India, I have travelled extensively throughout China, Thailand and Indonesia and am accustomed to the culture shock of living in a developing country.

I stayed in Sunder Nagar a nice little gated neighborhood filled with rich cricket players, ambassadors and other well to dos. It is near the OBEROI hotel.
There are two hotels in this exclusive enclave: La Sagrita guesthouse ( $70/nite nothing fancy) and Jukaso Inn.
There is a main square with a cool gym that i went to. I think i paid 8bucks a day to work out..You can arrange for a membership which would be much cheaper. I trained with some pretty big guys. Back home i am a member of Gold's Gym in venice beach. The gym was really quiet and was really modern and clean. When I worked out i had a crowd of trainers on me.. all wanting to push the little dude to his limits!
They have a sister gym in Bombay. The name is Barbarium Gym and you can do a google search on it.
have fun!

Thumbs up South Delhi: A coalition of the gym-ing

If you're finding it hard to find exercise in Delhi that doesn't break the bank, we would like to create an active cartel to join a decent gym that is right next to a ~30m long swimming pool (opens in summer, mid-March they say) where we're told you can do laps without people cutting across the breadth.

They also turn down the volume on the thumping music, may play your tracks and it's not in a basement but has great natural light for those of you who don't like the cramped tubelit basement gyms which threaten your hearing. This is a great part of why we like it.

Link to Gym location, next to St. Thomas's Catholic church on Africa Avenue, a quick commute from many neighborhoods including Def Col, Safdarjung Enclave, Hauz Khas, RK Puram, Anand Niketan, Munirka and Vasant Vihar.

It has the bizzare name of Barbarian Gym -- because of that alone, I did not venture close to it until I had seen all other gyms around. I don't know who does their marketing, but nothing inside is remotely neanderthal.

* The offer that they made us was a rate of 2 375 per month for each person, if we had 10 people join. So far this looks likely unless we can get more people soon.
* Since that is a quarterly rate, the fee for 3 months is 7 110 and with 12.5% tax that comes to 8 000 for a quarter.

If we have more people join however we can get a rate of 2 500 per person, per month, including taxes.

* They let you have a free workout to try their place.
* The pool will be open by the 2nd week in March and the pool rate offered was 700 per month.
* I have asked whether we might be able to make occasional use of the other location (included in the fee) of the same chain which is at Sundar Nagar, closer to Khan Market for the days that the traffic is crazy and you plan to be in Central Delhi and they have said yes. We must get this in writing then.
* I am sorry if this is more than what you had wanted to pay, but I am constrained by limitations in my ability to bargain effectively.
* Hours of opening: 5am to 10pm all days except Friday which is a holiday.
*

* How often you can use it : As often as you'd like.
* Terms of membership: Nothing to note here -- nothing out of the ordinary, no dress code or other restrictions if that was a concern.
* How it looks: I don't have pics, but when I went it was clean, tidy and new. It has natural light during the day and overlooks the swimming pool. I'm told there isn't a rush for machines, even the treadmill and the people exercising looked relaxed and not overly concious. I'm told that the assistants can be obsequious, but that's often the case.
* The minimum period of membership is 3 months which is a quarter of a year with the dues paid upfront for 3 months at the start. While this is a lot of money, most other places in Delhi offer half-year or full-year membership so it is relatively good in comparison. That's why I would like to bargain on the monthly rate to get a better deal. Apparently taxes are extra.
* Classes: So far, what I know is that there's personal training coaches available. As far as I know, these do not cost extra.

Hope that this is useful to you and let me know if you decide to join so that we can make an effective coalition in case we need to ask for other extras.

I used to go to a gym in Pahaganj but it has closed. Does anyone know of a half decent gym near to ND Railway Station/the Main Bazaar or even near to Connaught Place? It doesn't have to be state of the art, just adequate (free weights).
