Best way to get a legitimate taxi from the Delhi train station to my hotel

What's the best way to find a legitimate taxi after I arrive at the Delhi train station to take me to my accomodation in New Delhi?

Go to the pre-paid taxi booth. Which station? And what is your destination? One can also use the metro for some destinations from Old Delhi & New Delhi stations only.

Where abouts in Delhi do you need to go? What time to you arrive? There will be plenty of taxis to choose from outside the station. They are all legitimate but they won't all necesarily charge the same price.

Thank you all. I don't know which station. I'm coming in from Hardiwar (from being in Rishikesh) at 14:30 on the NZM AC SPL from Dehra Dun. What I have just gives Delhi as the destination. I'll be going to the New Delhi Bed and Breakfast located in the Friends Colony.

The radio cab info looks good. Think I could call them before I get on the train in Hardiwar?

NZM is Nizamuddin, where your train will arrive. It's very close to Friends Colony, about 3 km. If u don't have a lot of baggage, u cud take a 3-wheeler also.

Quite true, if you are only a couple of people and there isn't too much luggage then you would be better off taking an Auto. Do take one from the prepaid stand to ensure they are not able to overcharge you.

Send a message via Skype™ to Aman
If the distance is 3 km from station to ur stay then Auto is best option and it will cost only around Rs 25

Thanks! All good news. The prepaid stand will be right outside the station? It's just me and a couple of smallish bags.

there is a prepaid auto stand just outside and to the left OF Nizamuddin Station. It is for AUTOS only - you will have to haggle with the taxis if you want them to go on the meter, even though they are supposed to do the meter. We went down to DELHI Bed and Breakfast in FRIENDS COLONY EAST, not NEW DELHI and NOT NEW FRIENDS COLONY< which is a different enclave, from there about 10 days ago - if you can you should get the owner to EMAIL the precise directions - I will tell you from having done this many times now that you tell the driver to go to ASHRAM CHOWK - you then go straight through that intersection, under the flyover (from NZM you will be on Mathura Road and the turnoff to the guesthouse is just south of Ashram flyover)and get the driver to bear over on the left hand side - there will be autos and busses stopping there, and turn left into the first turning - its just before the Faridabad Petrol Pump which is also on the lefthand side. Its a small lane with a few veg carts and auto drivers hanging around and a State Bank of India office on the right as your next landmark - turn right into the lane just past that and go to A/6 - thats the guesthouse address - there is a buzzer up on the left next to the gate. Good luck!

Whoa! Slow down, way too much detail!
Friends Colony (E and W) IS in New Delhi (big town, this).
Good point u raise about the side of the road though, so -

diana,
1. Find the prepaid counter for autos/three-wheelers. There cud be touts milling about, all telling u they work for the prepaid service - they don't, so ignore them. The way u'll recognise the counter - it will say so on a board. They will also give u a proper receipt, the others don't. One stub goes to the driver, but only AFTER u are satisfied he's taken u to the right place, so hang onto it till the end!

2. Give the FULL address to the counter guys, not forgetting to mention u want to go to FC EAST. They will charge u the right amount. (If the driver takes u in circles trying to find the place, u pay nothing extra, so he won't have any incentive to do unnecessary kms).

3. The driver will know that FC is past the "Ashram Chauk" crossroads. U'll recognise the crossroads by seeing an overpass (flyover) running left to right in front of u shortly before u arrive at the crossroads, which u have to pass under as jenk says. And shortly thereafter is the petrol pump. The rest shud be easy as per jenk's instructions.

Thanks Jenk and Dilliwalla!

Got back from Delhi the end of January, and not knowing the city (and the drivers really didn't seem to know Friends Colony East either), these directions saved me!

For others cruising this site, Delhi Bed and Breakfast was just fine. Especially when you need some ease after coping with your India travels. They have a website.

You're welcome, diana. I'd forgotten this thread completely.

What were their tariffs like?
