Wow, Nattacia, you ought to be able to get a mansion for $US80 a night! We stayed in Karol Bagh, which is a pretty cheap area but less rowdy than the popular budget area around the station, and got a double room with ensuite, air-conditioner, fridge, and TV for $US15. Now, this was hardly what you'd call mid-range, and I would expect that you'd look at it with some trepidation.... but don't think for a moment that you have to pay Aussie prices, or even Mumbai prices, in Delhi! I recall that at one stage we were looking towards staying at a hotel in Old Delhi -- I think it might have been called the Broadway -- and it was $US45 a double, and it looked absolutely beautiful, though far more (and more expensive) than what we needed. If I were you, that is the kind of price I would be looking at.

What is the name of the hotel where you stayed for USD15 in Karol Bagh. I would see if I could stay there during my next visit to Delhi in August. When I went there 2 years ago, I had to pay approx. USD30 for the similar room in Karol Bagh. Thanks. Mercurie

Hi, Mercurie!
The hotel inb Karol Bagh was a special deal which we got, quite by chance, over the internet when we happened upon a travel agent names Sanjay, who turned out to be the answer to prayer. We had asked him about another hotel he handles, which had been reported to us as a budget choice, and he wrote back saying that the price of this particular one had gone up considerably since the report we had read, and it was now poor value for its one-star status.... a nice, honest approach. He recommended some two- and three-star hotels for around the same price, but we resisted, telling him that we were looking for something in a lower price range.... whereupon he offered us the Suma Palace, which is right nearby the agency where he works. Normal price for our room was $USD22 (and, of course, the proprietor tried to charge us that when we were checking out.... but luckily Sanjay had come to oversee the checking-out process, so there was no argument). Sanjay was also on hand when we arrived, to check out the room and offer us some cups of chai..... even though this was quite late at night. He's the kind of fellow for whom nothing is too much trouble. My advice to you is to contact him and see if he can still get the Suma Palace at the same (or similar) price (if you email him, ask for him by name, as I have no way of knowing how good the other people in the travel agent are). You can mention me, by all means, as he still sneds us emails at Christmas and Diwali. His address is info@ access-india.com. Good luck! |

I stayed in 'La sangrita' in Sunder Nagar. It was really nice, not very central, but good if you want to stay in a nice green area away from the real touristy areas.

I stayed in Nirulas Hotel in Connaught Place last year for a couple of days and it was really cool... we went for the luxury suite (around 50 dollars) and it was amazing.. the balcony was almost as big as the 'flat' itself and looked out onto CP. Room service in this place is fab too as you can choose anything from the nirulas restaurant. It really is worth getting the suite as its only a bit more than the standard rooms . Normally i stay in sunny guest house around the corner.....

sunder nagar guest houses
Sunder Nagar is a very nice upscale locality in Central/South Delhi. It is basically a cluster of impressive homes surrounding a little market place. The stores all specialize in antiques -- it's great fun to browse through their collections, although products can be pricey. There's also a nice tea shop called Mittal that has special teas from various regions, and nice gift packs. I recommend the Kashmiri kewha!
The market only has one eatery, I think, but it's a fun little place that offers south indian cuisine (dosas, idlis) as well as delicious sweets, with outdoor seating. There are a handful of guest houses there that offer a range of accommodations. I think that the cheapest one is the La Sangrita. I just stayed there for one night last week. They were originally asking Rs. 2250 plus 12.5% tax, but I asked them for a discount and they gave me a small room for 2000+tax. The room was quite fine for 2 people -- nice bathroom (with a full bath tub and a spacious counter!), cable, central AC. There are other guest houses in the neighborhood that are good too -- Maharani, Sherwani Fort View. You can shop around a bit, but in general, rates are going to start around 2000 I think. If you can afford to spend a bit extra, around 2250 or 2500, it might be worth it for a more spacious and comfortable room. Sunder Nagar has a good location -- adjacent to the Zoo and the Purana Qila, very close to Khan Market (for great bookstores and fresh produce and meats -- favorite shopping for expat diplomat types), and reasonably close to Ct. Place as well as South Delhi locations (Lajpat Nagar, Greater Kailash, New Friends Colony, etc.). I spent a night at Yatri House too, and really liked it, but had to check out because other guests were arriving with advance booking. There are only a handful of rooms there. Yatri House is quite serene, and the rooms seem spacious. My only problem with it was the location -- it was a bit north of Ct. Place, without any little restaurants in the immediate vicinity, and the main road running to Ct. Place was really, really congested, which tends to beat me down a bit in Delhi. The good part was that it was quite close to the metro station. It was my first ride on the metro -- very exciting! |

One more place to consider in the same price range is Jorbagh27. It's located further south, close to Lajpat Nagar...
