.... yes, definitely. And even if the giftee happens to be a teatotaler - they can get good mileage with it bartering, regifting .... or serving the nectar to their guests on special occasions.
We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. ~

Careful, if you bring scotch as a gift to India - in hopes that they will regift it back to you in the form of a goood stiff drink. You might well be considered an 'Indian Giver' .... in more ways than one.

Indian Beer is made from Black carrots and is available in spring time only. It is spicy, saltish and tangy in taste. In delhi and north india it Goes by name "Kanji" and is not a branded or bottled drink. Normally is home made, Sun dried like pickles, but few road side vendors also sell it from big eathren pots ( make sure for kind of water used in preprations.)It is very different from IMFL, indian manufactured foriegn liqour.

Iggy72,
You should try chaang in Sikkim, the local home brewed beer!

CM, kanji is nothing like beer i.e. no hops, & barley/grains. I do like it a lot but it's just fermented carrot juice.
Iggy72, in India you'll find mostly lagers (& alcohol content around 5%) though there is Hayward's which is supposedly a stout. I have not tried it so can't say what it's like.
Kingfisher isn't bad. There are several variations of it including Blue which has a higher alcohol content, but it tastes pretty disgusting and watery. I was at a friend's place in Delhi last week, and tried the new Kingfisher Ultra which is more full-bodied. It's made from hops and barley from abroad (don't know which country). It was ok I thought. I think I've tried the "Premium" version too at some point, but didn't find it anything to write home about.
In Kolkata, Kalyani's used to popular. I used to drink Kalyani Black Label when I visited Kolkata years ago. Don't know if it is still available. It was decent. In Goa, I tried King's Black Label which was alright too.
If you are a beer afficionado, Indian beers aren't going to impress you, and we're not even talking price which is very high given the quality, but on a hot/warm day, I wouldn't turn down even an ok & overpriced chilled beer.
