Bangladeshi market, Delhi
An Indian diplomat suggested I consider living there when we move to Delhi next week. He said it's central, cosmopolitan, close to Mandi theatre area and Indian Habitat Centre. Does anyone know the Bangla market area? what's it really like?
cheers! |

Hello Dean.
A word of warning (and I truly hope that someone corrects me on this).
A friend in Delhi told me there is often tension between the Bangladeshi immigrants (mostly illegal) and the locals, mainly over jobs (the Banga's will work for less Rs), but often over a silly argument between a few people. The locals are said to treat the Bangla's like dirt. I would worry if there were to be a major incident that could spark off serious communal unrest and disorder. I can only pass on what a friend told me. It seems kind of strange saying all that, especially when you consider that I live in Whitechapel, London, and about 60% of the people in my local area are of Bangladeshi appearance. ![]() |

Hello Dean,
Might your friend have been referring to Chittaranjan Park? It is a residential colony in South Delhi, close to Greater Kailash. I lived there for three months in 1994 and found it to be convenient, *very* Bengali, and a pleasant place to live. Met many nice families there and had a great time. While there were posher areas, I though Chittaranjan Park had a lovely neighborhood vibe. There was a market area where you could find reasonably priced goods and Bangla was the main language spoken in that market, but (in 1994) there were not many Bangladeshi residents in Chittaranjan Park that I met (may have just been my circle of acquaintance), and I don't remember the market being referred to as the "Bangladeshi Market." Maybe your friend is referring to another area or terms/ times have changed? Any way, I am no expert on Delhi (others on this site are, perhaps they'll have more info). I loved staying in Chittaranjan Park. If it hasn't become overcrowded/ congested in the intervening ten years, I'd recommend it as a place to live. Cheers -- GM Edited to add: In 1994, most residents were from West Bengal (rather than Bangladesh), and Bangla, Hindi, and English all spoken fluently. Ah, well, Chittaranjan Park is the Bengali colony in New Delhi. I would say it is well worth checking out when you are looking for housing. Based on what I've seen in other Indian cities recently, I'd worry that an older colony like Chittaranjan Park may be getting overcrowded and congested -- this is just a guess, no firsthand experience since 1994. Also, I don't recall many British or European expats being situated there, if that matters? Well, as more expats have relocated to Delhi this also may have changed.
Good luck and enjoy yourself -- I envy you! GM |
