Have you read the joke about bagels in Leo Rosten's book "The Joys of Yiddish"?:

A man from Mars landed on Second Avenue and looked into a store window, fascinated. Finally he entered the shop and asked the owner, "What are those little wheels in the window?"
"Wheels, what wheels?"
The Martian pointed.
"Those aren't wheels," smiled the baleboss [owner]. "They're called bagels. We eat them...Here, try one."
The Martian bit into a bagel and smacked his lips. "Man! This would go great with cream cheese and lox!"

Great book - lots of fun stuff in there.

Well, yes, unless you happen to be Hindu - we get to do this many, many times.

I do agree fully with your main point - no need for guilt just because you're living the good life.
I do, somewhat, compromise by being a tad too generous to the people around me - driver, servants, waiters et al.
For no good reason, I gave my driver Rs. 500 this morning, and my cleaning lady Rs. 200. Thank God the Mrs. wasn't here.

My brother is so disdainful of my tipping, he has set up a plate at his house - "If you feel like giving away Rs. 100, just put it here".

I think I'll be broke pretty soon, unless Mrs. AWh arrives back in India on time.

Cheers,

I also have to tread lightly around my wife whenever I pay someone a bonus

Even the cleaning lady/cook clucked disapprovingly when she saw me giving an extra 100 Rs to the gardener, could see her thinking 'Arre crorepati, you better think of me come diwali!'. Old trader's advice: Whenever you're in doubt about taking a position, ask your wife

Had a long chat with the old punjabi gangster who runs the business from which I rent a car, they had inflated the bill by 7000 Rs. Anyway, I came in and put the bill in front of him asking if he thought I looked like a woman, that put him off balance, especially after following it with 'then why are you trying to sc**w me?'. After laughing, trading light insults, drinking chai and negotiating for half an hour, I walked out with a new bill, 5500 Rs lighter. He still has me for 1500 but made the mistake of inviting me to his home for food and drink, I promised him I'd take the 1500 in the form of whisky!

What a country!

Great story!
I'd love to meet a Punjabi gangster - on my terms only, though. Ain't going to happen.
I romancize of mixing with the bad element, fortune has (fortunately?) kept me away from such adventures (mis-adventures - who knows.)

You should have seen the scene: he's about 75 years old, a Sikh, dressed in a long robe with orange turban, long white beard, 2 young guys sitting next to him, jumping at his beck and call.....but he has a mind like a computer. Remember, i walked in fully determined not to pay the fraudulent 7000 Rs and walked out feeling good and still overpaying 1500 He should work for the IRS. Have to add that I'm no pushover when money's concerned but ok, the old buzzard knew what he was doing and he had time on his side, had I kept it up another 30 minutes I might have shaved off another 1000 but it wasn't worth it.

Oh yeah, while pulling all his shenanigans there was some rythmic chanting coming out of a computer....he told me it was a reading of the Sikh holy book and helped him have pure thoughts

gw5458 - loved the martian bagel story Sounds like a great read, I'll check it out.

puchoo, ain't that the truth w/ auto rickshaws! They see me coming trying my best to not look like I just got off the plane, and peg me immediately. Course locals get screwed too, so why not us! It's all a matter of degree. My son is going to be 18 next yr and this might his last trip to Nani (maternal grandmother) India as he calls it w/o the lioness to protect him, so I see he's trying his best to practice his Hindi. His haggling skills are atrocious, but it's fun to watch. Shopkeepers get quite a kick out of a tall white-looking boy asking them about their products!

Thanks for the story, dillichaat - that gangster sounds like a hoot. Never met a Sikh gangster before, sounds like he could teach the IRS a trick or two, eh! India is indeed a country like no other. Even my husband who can't stand visiting there sometimes says he wouldn't mind living there just for the experience alone if nothing else.

AFH - I'm too generous a tipper too, and have to watch it in India. In our case, hubby is the one who reins me in, not the other way around unlike you and dchaat

My kids must be desperate b/c today they ate a Kashmiri taelwor (sorta bagel) and didn't even whine about the texture or missing cream cheese. They happily ate it w/ fresh white butter, and said "it's good in its own way, ma" There is hope for them after all!

If it results in people tripping over each other to help the stupid overtipping American it's pretty much worth it in my book...

OK, that's it, I'm getting my plane ticket!! I checked out the menu & I'm drooling.

For those of you who are not bagel "mavens" (experts), let me say that if they really are making them the way it says in the menu "boiling then baking" they should be a really pukka bagel! It's hard to find them made properly anywhere. A bagel is not just a roll shaped like a donut. It's supposed to be made with high gluten flour, then boiled in a huge "boiler", then baked in an oven. The results are heavenly--soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside.

Well, if these come even close, I would be really happy! I always say it would be hard for me to live anywhere where I can't buy real bagels.
