| auto-rickshaw prices in ND I go to ND at least twice a year and love the place. I often go from the Imperial Hotel to one of the bars on the outer circle - 5-10 mins depending on the traffic. i get quoted 50 - 100 rs. According to the fare website I could go to old Delhi for that, possibly even Agra. Now i dont mind paying over the odds - i am implausibly rich by indian standards and if my fare gets the driver's wife some flowers that night, or gets a mechanic to check the dodgy starter motor or gets the money-lender of the drivers back for a 24 hours then its money well spent. But what would a New delhi-ite pay? Just for once i would like to tell some aimiable rogue that contrary to appearances,i do know what I am doing...... |

| Suggestions : Take the auto a few metres away from Imperial maybe from Janpath market. Flag down a running auto instead from the stand stand. Do not pay more than 20 Rs. Walk away if they don't agree. Shake your head vigourously and say " Main udhar Chal ke ja sakta hoon " ( I can walk to that place). 20 Rs for a few hundred metres is a steal for them especially as they can pick up loads of passengers anywhere on the Outer circle after dropping you. Anyplace on outer circle is 5-10 min walking from Imperial. Why not walk ? Cut thru the central park to your bar, whichever it is. Return trip could be on an auto , if required, subject to what state you are in. Also, ask to be taken to Cental Cottage Industries Emporium on Janpath and never Imperial. |

| I have some Hindi words you could try, too. But I wouldn't print them here. Like the old joke says: a girl's best friends are her feet.

| Always carry small denomination notes. Don't get in an auto or even stand as if you're about to get in until you're happy with the fare. Losing interest and walking away will have them chasing after you, if not autos are a dime a dozen. Oh, and if they say "What you like" hand over what you know is fair and walk away. If they call after you asking for more, shout back "Sorry, no change" ![]() EDITED TO ADD: If you don't speak Hindi and find phrases hard to remember, all is not lost. A Martian looking incredulous at a quoted price, saying "bleep bloop blerp?" and walking away would get the message across just as well!

| thanks folks, I have tried most of the above save the hindi. I suspect that the reaction to that would be - 'if I have to listen to that accent, I am definitely not dropping below 50rs' |
