Arriving in Delhi early in AM

My Soulmate and her travel companions have questions about arriving in Delhi late at night:

Is the Delhi Traffic Police pre-paid taxi booth outside the entrance of the airline terminal open at 2:00 AM?

They have received advice to go directly to the Majnu Ka Tila Tibetan Village and avoid Delhi. Does anyone know of a place to stay there? Would there be a place that would take them in at that time of the morning or would it be more advisable to just get a basic hotel near the airport and deal with the village after sleep? They will have been traveling for nearly 24 hours.

They are traveling to Mcleod Ganj and would like to know if travel by train to Pathankot then by bus/taxi to Dharamasala is preferable to traveling by the Potala bus from Majnu Ka Tila village to Mcleod Ganj?

I can only say that by going first to Ka Tila Tibetan Village and then straight to McCloud ganj you will be missing India altogether which is a shame as Indian culture is a least as colourful as the the Tibetan culture!!
Try a stay in Central Delhi in Paharganj or Connaught Circus for a feel of India, Delhi really is'nt so bad and it certainly should'nt be avoided.
Try the hotels section here for some ideas on where to stay, some hotels will even pick you up from the airport for a price!!
Travel by bus or train, well either way the time difference is'nt great but for comfort I'd go with the train every time, When you get to Panthenkot there's always a chance to pool together with some other folks for a taxi, this will shave a couple of hours off the journey!!

After travelling for so many hours, its best to make things as easy as possible - reserve the 1st nights hotel in advance in Delhi somewhere. budgetasiatravel.com has some of the best rates I've seen and has many Delhi hotels. As far as getting to Mcleod Ganj, I would also suggest the train rather than bus. Although I have not taken any long bus rides in India, I did run into a couple of people from Ireland who said their backs were about broken by the time they got there from Delhi. We got a taxi for the trip from the Pathankot train station to Dharamsala, I don't remember what we paid exactly but it was reasonable.

This website is so awesome!
You people are so awesome!!

~Cyberhippie: I totally agree with you. Certainly, it would be a shame if they went directly to Dharmasala without experiencing more of India--especially Delhi. Their trip to India has a focus of volunteering in acupuncture clinics and a clinic in Dharmasala is their primary destination. After they're done, they'll tour south and experience much, much more. (Color me green with envy!)

~Sueg: Thank you too! We will surf the website you offered and certainly consider the train.

So, about the police station at that time of night/morning...do you think they would be open?

Yes but it's buried in with all the other prepaid taxi stands. Look for the sign on top.

Also, going directly to Manju Ka Tila is not avoiding Delhi. People speak of it as if it was a garden enclave of Delhi. At least before they go there. It's a great place to be if you just have an interest in/ want to support the local Tibetan community. But it's still Delhi with all that entails.
