You can get little ones from gift shops and shops that sell religious items. About Delhi, I don't know, but I could find you one here quite easily, so I'm sure it won't be hard --- if I'm imagining the same thing you are.

I've wondered about these things! Mercury (as well as being very poisonous) is a liquid: what are these things made of? Perhaps someone will be along who knows...

And Welcome to the site!

Since no one's answered yet, I haven't the foggiest. However, I recognize some pics I found.

So doing a web search for it, you'll find it on sale and it does seem to contain some (or a container of?) mercury. Seems to be highly esoteric to me.

E.g., http://www.rudraksha-ratna.com/dispP...hp?prodId=3004 : "Complete with 8 Sanskaars(8 stage of Purifications done as per Parad Sanmhita) and removal of Saptakanchuki(100 % medicated and hygienic); the Siddha Parad(Mercury mouth closed with Aghor Vidhya) is formed to make Murthi-Badhha/Agnibadha(sustain the heat) Shiva lingam."

I've no idea what most of that means, and I don't know what that "mouth" means but it would appear to indicate a precise spot or container on/in the lingam, but if Aghor Vidhya is somehow linked to Aghori doctrines, you could well be getting into highly esoteric territory here indeed (or it may not mean very much at all). Vidhya appears to mean science, knowledge, but occult knowledge as well, indeed. Siddha comes from siddhi btw (usually: one who has attained such), roughly meaning (occult) powers or attainments so to speak.

Maybe AvidTrekker or KulluKid or one of those folks will see this & be able to tell us more

ps That site dwells on it a bit more here, if still half-incomprehensible to me: http://www.rudraksha-ratna.com/parad...befbf969d 294. "Prepared by Ayurvedic methods as written in ancient scriptures. Made out of Siddh Parad/Mercury and rare herbs. The Shivling contains no other metal except Mercury. It can be made to powder by crushing and as well can be turned in to the Pure Mercury form by heating to the very high temperature comply with the Parad Sanmhita."

I guess mercury due to its very nature may well have been ascribed esoteric/alchemistic properties yes.

I think they tend to be adorned with (semi-) precious stones or metals yes, that's what that first link would suggest. The second one shows one that seems to be pure metallic though, I don't (think I) know that kind.

Would be nice again if someone in the know stumbles over this.

btw On rereading the above, I guess the Siddh(a) Parad would then be equivalent to mercury (if it's thought to hold some intrinsic power, that wouldn't surprise me), while the Parad Sanmhita would then be some instructions on how to deal with/sanctify it. Or whatever, it's arguably beyond me.

Parad lingam is a lingam made out of solidified Mercury. The solidification process is supposed to be a secret. Available at very many places, including the internet. My friend has it, his Guru gave it to him. (We cannot ask that source, for it was given without asking ). Another friend has bought it after paying some 21000 rupees.

I have not bought any, so cannot vouch for any one source.

Yep... and it looks like mercury looks.

My guess it is a mercury-rich amalgam, and it is probably unhealthy to be near one!

Nick, I thought it brought prosperity.... Then why do we get it placed and worship it.?

Great marketing job by the makers!

The entire present-day romantic image and pricing of diamonds is a result of decades of carefully-targeted marketing by DeBears (Sp?). But hey, they never thought of hitting India with 'holy and auspicious'!

I gather they are expensive. So only prosperous people will buy them...

Mercury is a potent and lethal poison, even in in tiny quantities.

Hey! I'm only theorising here!

(apart from mercury being poisonous; that's a fact)

A shiv ling in any form is holy and auspicious. Whether it's formed of mercury, a stone or ice. Talking about companies or promoting channels, the idea of selling these gets destroyed.

and I too agree.... the parad lingam comes out to be really expensive.

If a devotee worships with complete faith and patience. the results could be more fruitful to worship a stone lingam than a parad lingam where you just place it in your house seeking thy blessing.
